I have a 742 case 8 3/4 with 3.91 gears and spool. Ruined my pinion and gears with an improper driveshaft (long story) So since I need a new ring and pinion I want to go to 4.10's What would be an average charge to do the labor
Thanks.

I don't think you will find a worthwhile performance change from 3.91 to 4.10
My Sport had performance close to yours and I went from 4.30 to 3.91 to try stopping running out of motor on the top end and noticed no appreciable difference.

I gotta have a word with Alan. That's too cheap. Actually, just a gear swap, really isn't an "overhaul". Normally when I do rear setups, they include replacing all bearings, disassembly, inspection and rebuilding of the sure grip, etc. You might expect to pay around 250-300 plus parts for that type of job. If it's busted up, you can spend the better part of 30-40 min getting the housing clean as it needs to be done by hand. I can't fit an axle housing in the jet wash tank. Just a gear swap(no broken parts), with a spool and the labor time is cut down dramatically. 100-150 is about right. MB

Yes, where houses cost 50 grand and he probably pays $750/mo. rent on his shop.
Actually I wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys that do it real cheap, just pop off the ring gear use the old pinion depth shim and slap it together without checking anything. I could do that for 25 bucks if you want.

Are we talking about someone carrying a center section in the door or are we including disassembling the rear/axles, etc. and pulling the center out?
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.
