Yeah a cheaper alternative would be to have your local machine shop take a look at the crank and he can grind or polish it for you for only a couple hundred bucks, then do new bearings and you'll have a good bottom end. Then you can deglaze the cylinders with your drill mounted hone, throw in a new set of piston rings and go. Would be a lot cheaper than tearing the whole block down and having all the machining done, etc. Once you start doing boring, block shaving, balancing, rods new or recon'd, cam bearings, hot tanking, etc etc etc the $$$ adds up fast.
Another option is PAW has their rebuilt 440 short block and long blocks on sale for a pretty good deal these days, when you consider they handle all the running around on their end.
FWIW cast 440 cranks are said to be good to around 600 horse.

or even if you are tearing it down to the bare block to clean it, etc. instead of a drill mounted deglazer, it was only $3 a hole to have the machine shop here hone it on their machine....

That's a smoking deal , it's $150 here to just get it honed ...

Depends on how strong your bank is. Quality is just not found around here (CT) for $3/hole.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I've got the same bucket I had when I was a kid terring things up, it's always on the half empty side.
I like the idea of finding a steel crank and good pistons, take your time do the best you can afford and have fun.
Have a great day Iowan

Also, PAW has good deals on their short and long block 440's right now. I've bought parts from them........in 1988.

I believe PAW went under around 2009? Their huge catalog was like the Sears Christmas Wishbook! Paw is an outfit that put the hurt on the brick and mortar speed shops. Speed shop owners blew off "mail order" parts places and this disregard was to their demise. Then around 2000 PAW blows of "Website and internet ordering" and it was to their demise as well. Interesting.
Keep old mopars alive.
