If it's man-made, then there's always the chance of failure. Saying there's no possibility of it ever coming apart is ridiculous.

OK Mr ..... tell us all here HOW that is possible.
You would have to have a engine capable of RPMing like a F1 motor to explode an aftermarket billet front drum.
Oh ...and I never said NOT running any safety equipment ...I just suggested that you did NOT have to empty-your-wallet to protect yourself.

I'll stay out of the p*ssing contest, but aftermarket drum or not I have a good shield on my car....the CSR are nice, and the blankets can be a pain, but if you have a stock firewall and are using stock type motor mounts the shields can be a real bear when trying install the motor...I hammered the firewall/floor seem-lip flat and it was still a real PITA getting it in, I had to remove the motor mounts and position the engine in, then re-install the mounts once it was all in place, not a real enjoyable job...while doin this I would have traded the shield for a blanket..lol....this is just my experience...

Like I said, ANYTHING can fail. Whether it's billet or whatever, it CAN fail. Sure they are very strong and it's unlikely it would come apart, but saying it's impossible to blow one up is going out on a limb. CHIP

And you think a glide won't explode...I have a co-worker/friend that has no case or drums left of a glide after it exploded...and this happened in reverse.
I too myself use a billet steel drum and CSI carbon-fiber shield to protect myself...though I did have the shield prior to replacing the drum...but I still use the shield also.

I went through 4 of them with my trans down at Summit trying to get one tha lined up. None were even close. And after seeing those pics that were on here a while back where the drum went through the sheild, I'll stay with my blanket.

Everyone else has them fit the trans with no trouble, I go through 4 and none fit 
Everyone else has them fit in their B bodies with out having to do much more than smak the lip of the firewall flat. Only way I get it in there is by cutting the tunnel out and fabing a new one

I think you will need a shield no matter what is inside your trans in order to pass tech, it looks like 10.99 and quicker. Check out this link http://www.nhra.net/content/about.asp?articleid=34603&zoneid=101
