The yoke will be coming out so yes the whole pig will need to come out/apart as the pinion will have to come out for a new crush sleeve & it is my understanding when going back together replacing it w a solid sleeve is a better choice.

Just put a new seal in it and torque it back to spec and it'll be fine. No need to completely dissemble a rear just to put a pinion seal in it. I have never had any problems. My Dana 70 in my 1 ton broke the yoke in half from around the pinion, I pulled the nut, put a new seal in it, tightened the new yoke back to torque spec and it has never leaked and the rear hasn't changed at all.
Just do it. You will be fine. Was/is done all the time. Have never seen a service shop tear a rear down to just replace a pinion seal.

trick is to mark the nut and pinion before removing the nut and yoke then torque it back to specs and dont go past the mark if it goes past the mark ..you just crushed the crush sleeve more and changed the pinion depth and it will start howling soon after and eat its self up the longer it howls DAMHIK... results will vary...good luck

the torque spec would be to measure the preload on the pinion as it is turned,IIRC after trashing 2 489s,fixing the pinion seal,I let it leak and keep a check on it... helps with rust prevention on the bottom rear of my truck to boot good luck

No need to remove anything else if it is the pinion seal that is leaking. I personally spoke to Dr. Diff on this very subject thanks to a recommendation from folks on this board. He sold me the correct seal and I will replace it tomorrow. He advised me to use an impact gun to tighten the pinion nut.....
