I have a 71 Satellite Sebring, a built 340 w/ shorty headers and 2.5" dual exhaust. I'm currently running a fairly new set of Magnaflow mufflers which were pricey, and which sound great but they're too loud for my taste. I want something quiet where I can hear myself think and not have much background noise if I'm on a bluetooth phone call.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Jim

I have Dynomax 17747's on my '69 Daytona (2 1/4" pipes) and they are real nice. Quiet and not offensive under normal conditions, nice tone when you want it. I'd buy them again in a minute.

318" summit headers into summit glasspacks, into 2 1/2" summit turbo mufflers at the end.

Car has a great carb, valvetrain sound, not to mention a scream when you mat it. Flows well enough for street cars applications. This is not uncommon and cars came from the factory with a similar design.

I had to, for noise restrictions from landlord, and neighboor complaints. No drone at idle or cruise. Exhaust note retains performance character.

I just picked up some Borla ProXS for my Duster.

Both my Brother and my Dad have the Dynomax Super Turbo. My Brothers 383 has some drone at highway speed, they are not too loud at all.

I wanted to try out the Borlas instead of copying them directly... You can see straight thru the Borlas. They dont look very restrive at all. If you are interested I can post a video of my 440 with the Borla mufflers in a couple of weeks.

I got the "Hemi" Super Turbos with the 20" case. They tuck up completely under my 66 Coronet with no ugly hang down hacked look.

The big case "Hemi" super turbo is a very good flowing muffler that is not too loud.
The smaller case superturbo seemed to drone a bit at 3,000+ RPM.
Walker also sells a universal muffler called the "sound fx"? I am not sure what they sound like, but I think they may be quieter than the super turbo?

which magnaflows? the larger the case, the quieter the muffler. if you've got a standard "super turbo" sized 14x4x9" case, switching to say a 12286 (5x8x24" case) or a 12586 (5x11x22" case) will net you 2-2.4 times the muffler volume.

the dynomax 17748 & 49 are large body (10x5x20) that will be among your quietest, but also best performing choices. I run a single 17769 (3" in/out/internal version of this muffler) with a 3" ID glasspack in the tail as a resonator behind a 360, it performs great, and my car is about as loud as a friend's with generic 2.5" 14x9x4 turbo mufflers.

if you have room, another cheaper alternative might be to keep your current mufflers and add a set of glasspacks in the tailpipes as resonators.

I had a speed shop in Pasadena do the exhaust, and the owner said that he installed the biggest muffler he could fit on on the car. Then we put on resonators at the end to muffle it some more.

My tolerance for the noise might be a little less than the average moparts member because this is my daily driver car (it's the newest car I own!) and I regularly drive my 3 year old around in it. It's nice to be able to hear him when he's trying to say something, and I don't want his hearing to be impaired at all because of my stupid exhaust.

I don't want to give up performance, but if I have to trade, I'll take quiet over performance.

Thanks.

Jim

Hi Jim,
Dyno Max, Magnaflow, Flow Master, Anything with
the name Turbo muffler in it will be somewhat loud.
You want a quiet muffler, you might need a stock
one. Headers add to the noise also. I've tried
them all over the years and quiet is not one of
them.
Stock manifolds will help and a stock style
muffler will make it able to talk on the cell.

If you are building up mild engines, and want to keep a sleeper factory vette like sound. imo- running a summit glasspack and summit muffler ""17 "body" 2 1/2" turbo type"" system is ideal. Parts cost is about $50 in mufflers.

The economic veiw point is the cost of one dynomax small muffler.

No resonator tips, that makes more noise.

In the morning i can cold idle at 1200rpm without echoing off the apartment builds at 5 AM and forming a hate squad 3 blocks long.

The DynoMax Super-Turbos behind the TTI's on the 440 are not loud. Just sweet. No drone and do not annoy the neighbors. Much better than the average pickup or Harley.

My SpinTech mufflers had a drone from he11 between 35 and 45 mph. I now have the Dynomax turbo mufflers and there is a mild drone with those, but it's not too bad. I run a 440 with HP manifolds and 2 1/2 pipes.

thrush welded series sound good and are cheap. looks just like a flowmaster and sounds good too. the bonus is their only about 40$. seems to me thats about a third of what a flowmaster costs. they make them in stainless also for around 80$

Well, I just bought a pair of Dynomax 17748's. I considered the Quiet-Flows but I was a little concerned about losing too much performance.

We'll see how much quieter it is afterwards!

Thanks for all the advice.

Jim
