You can do it with a stock block, but I would get an R-3 for the ability to get a bigger bore and longevity sake. Plus, an R-3 will allow you to add serious steam down the road if you choose.

Do it N/A. WAAAAAAAY more impressive than a power adder.

If your car works and with the correct gear and converter, 625-650 should get it done in good air and still be plenty driveable.

I've gone 10.10 with horrible track conditions. I think at the time my combo would have had a 9.90 without any problem.

Any comments on what brand of crank and rods are preferred and why?

Thanks.

I'm not building Ron anything, he is building it himself, I'm just selling him the proper components & machining.....he's plenty capable of putting it together.

If you think his old 4.375 LA enterprises crank was cool....... uh his new one will blow your mind. We should have it in 8-9 weeks.

I'd say it will have no problem running 9.70-9.80's on pump gas with mild Hyd roller, if he can ever get it to hook.

On a side note, we just got a new '72 Challenger out last weekend at Beaver Springs.... Buddy of mine from State College

3260# race weight, 14.5 Quick time Pros, 727/8" ATI/Moser S60 4.10's, 3" exhaust with bullets....

436 CID, 4.125" K1 crank, 4.10 bore
11:1 pump gas
mild 268 @ .050" Roller, .720"
TTI off shelf W2 1 7/8 headers
Old hand port arrington heads/intake 340/250 cfm
1050 Dominator

No traction, best 60' was 1.58, most 1.64-1.68's

Went 10.26 @ 136.1 MPH first time car was ever down a track.

96 degrees, 70% humidity/ 29.4 Baro. No tuning....

Made some chassis changes this week & will try to dodge raindrops this Saturday & see if we can get some traction... & then maybe I'll think about playing with jetting/timing. I was happy with MPH considering the weather for first day out. Will have new Altronics weather station this weekend as well to monitor the air better.

The reason I say it would be easy is the car only weighs 3,000 lbs.

I ran 9.90's in 1997 with a stock block 360 bored .100 over, stock crank. Good compression and good rods. The cam was a .628 roller. The heads were some old W2's that Roy Johnson used to run in the 70's. In todays standards there was absolutely nothing special about this engine. I had a horrible tuneup for a 175HP shot of Nitrous and a torque converter that was absolute junk, todays standards. The car at that time weighed 3,450 w/ driver.

A set of closed chamber Indy 360-2 heads. A 4" stroker crank. R blocks are great but there is a cost $$$ and weight. If you got the money the 48 degree lifter is awesome compared to 59. There is no reason with the heads available these days mail order and the ease of making over 400 inches that you can't make 650 HP and easily run 9.90 with a 3,000 lb car. This would not be a high RPM engine nor would it have to be a race gas engine. I will not go so far as to say easy on pump gas but with all the others who are familiar with pump gas combos it is something that can be done without a great deal of difficulty.

OK so must be about 4.5 inch stroke and 4.25 bore, gonna be the biggest mopar small block ever probably

I like that callies 4.25" crank because it is machined off a forging and is reasonable on price for what you get. I think on the rods I like the rods I had before as they are mid range too on price Vs light weight and strength. That was a Manley Pro Series Lightweight rod and if I remember correctly it was low 600 grams. Something like 618-629ish. It was 6.300 long chevy 2.100 LG and used a .927 wrist pin. 7/16 bolt. They were $1100-1200 a set.

If you are on a budget I would go off the shelf 4" stroke crank and there are several that make them in a forged version less than $1000 with a choice of 340 or 360 mains and mopar or chevy rods. Ohio Crankshaft is one. It might be worth a call to Ryan if you are serious about buying and order the stuff from him. Because he will know more specifically on brands etc.
Budget rods would be a Childs&albert/Manley/Lunati/Crower I beam stock type premium rod.

I also think if you want a 9.90 at the very least you need a new thick wall block. Mopar resto siamese block at the very least. Because the power needed will be right at the reliable limit of a stock block. The ONLY engine I have ever blown up was a 525 HP (calculated with Weight VS MPH = REAL HP) and it was with a 71 360 block and it split a cylinder wall and pretty much destroyed everything.

I have bragged on here about my old 416" W5 motor that Ryan helped me with.

It was a basic as it could be custom nothing other than Ryan porting the heads and Indy Intake manifold.

It was callies 4" crank Scat off shelf chivy rods shelf diamond flat tops. Compression was 11 to 1 ran it on 94 Octane gas.

Shadydell W5's with Indy intake 1050 Holley
Et streets on cal tracs thru exhaust went 9.96 at 136MPH at 3250lbs......... So tell your buddy to put that in his pipe and .......

It can easily be done with a 4" crank and some Big Indys or W5's nothing to fancy needed

I was. Guess that was kinda dirty considering it's demise.
One of the neatest packages ever for a street car.

If I ever get over this stock stroke, factory head rollercoaster, I'll
build something bigger with my W-5s.

would that be before or after you try a blower with stock stroke and factory heads?

Thanks for all the replies, its always good to get every ones opinions on the do's and dont's of building an engine, this thread has given me lots to think about.

By the way has anyone tried that 426 kit that Hughes sells? Im just curios

Here is what I can remember off the top of my head

R block 4.070 bore
Callies 4" crank
Diamond flat tops 11 to 1
Scat 6.125 chivy rods
CNC Shadydell W5's
stainless valves Norris rockers
Big Roller Cam card is in Ryans safe
Indy intake that Ryan converted for 4500 flange
Out of the box #8082 1050 doinator
TTi W5 headers and X pipe with 3" bullets
727 CRT tranny
8"Ptc 5500
4:56 gear dana 60
Cal tracs and all stock front suspension
car 3250lbs
30x12.50 ET streets

This thing ran on 94 octane and I drove it on the street alot. I spun a rod bearing from not having big enuff fittings and hoses on a remote oil filter and not enuff oil in the pan

When I blew it up I sold the top end all in the quest for more speed
