I have seen several e-bodies recently with 11" rear drums on cars with power disc brakes. Under what conditions did this happen? Also, in '69 & '70 the "normal" rear springs for cars with performance axle packages were HEMI springs, at some point in '71 it appears most 383 & 340 cars with A31 (3.91s) & A36 (3.55s) recieved the STANDARD rear springs. Anybody know why?

Dan,

I don't know if any sense will EVER be made out of this deal.

FYI: The Juliano BS27V1B is a column shift automatic, front disc brakes, with an 026 axle (4.10 Dana) per the broadcast sheet, but has always had the 11" rear brakes. The entire history from new is known.

One of the other cars I referenced is BS23V1B370411. Manual trans and built for Canada. 11" rear brakes from new.

Joe, does your car have a b'cast sheet? Is the AXLE 021?

Has anybody seen a '71 4.10 e-body with 10" rear drums, or a b'cast with other than 026 for the rear axle?

I don't know if the 021 would be found anywhere, I think your 11" rear drum 8-3/4 w/3.55s would be the same AXLE as Jim V's "hemi71x" original 383 car.

Here are pics of "shakerjoe's" 11" rear drums, complete with remnants of the original red paint.

Read the images at this link, there are at least two pages that mention the 11' drums for the E-Bodies, but it would be better to read the whole thing instead of just grabbing those pages out of context, so.....

The only time the 11" rear drums are mentioned is when front drums are involved.

There is mention of all Cuda's being equipped with HD suspension and 11" brakes. Could they be referring to drum brakes all around?

From the 71 Plymouth Salesman's Guide

71 11" rear drums (both Motor Wheel and Kelsey Hayes) are fin type.

Odd that they make mention of it for 70 and not 71, especially with two different part numbers. Maybe the part numbers reflected the two different manufacturers?

Possible that by '71 finned was "assumed" also?

It seems like they tended to drop abjectives now & then once items were no longer "new".

I have both drums on hand, and both are fin type. I also have aftermarket Budd-made drums, and they are fin-type as well. They probably just forgot to print the description, as has happened so many times before. Chrysler was also notorious for making assumptions that the parts department personnel would know how to interpret the publications, as well as the inevitable typo errors.
