The timing chain has always been a weak link.

Only if you have the nylon sprocket and fairly high milage. Steel gears and good chain rarely give any problem.

Now now, those are sprockets not gears.

Boy are we picky tonight. Fixed it you satified. I think everybody understood the way it was but since you insist.

You need to clear it with 440sixpack

How would that method tell you if your chain and sprockets were bad? You could have slop at the cam/distributor gear or slop where the distributor shaft meets the drive gear?

I don't know why everybody wants to turn this into a pee contest, I'm just tryin to find out what he DID. Did he move the dist. a few degrees, or a LONG ways?

The chances that something happened at the cam/ intermediate shaft--and the engine still runs is about nill

The way I see it IF he really had to change the dist to get it to run, the no 1 suspect is the cam drive.

But maybe he just THINKS he moved the timing---that is, maybe it's flooded like someone else mentioned, and moving the dist---it happened to start.

So it IS is it not important to tell as close as you can to what you DID and by how much. That is do you know for sure how much you actually changed the timing?

Another good thing to try--now that "it" has your attention--is to wrench the engine back/ forth against the timing chain slop. You'll feel it with a wrench, and it's obvious. If you have more than just a very few degrees, say 5* or so, the chain/ sprockets are toast.

just throwing this out there...my 440 was running like crap.....the original distributor bushings were worn pretty well and the vacuum advance was not working at all - replaced (upgraded) distributor and all was well

Wow. I am no expert on the ignition timing
by any means. The vac advance used to point in the 9 o'clock range now it is at 6 o'clock. So we timed it then tuned it with a vacuum guage. It seems to now be running strong but did not test drive it. Sorry I am not an ace mechanic.

mopar ignition box? try another one. vacuum leak? I dont think that the chain could skip that much but maybe I am wrong.

THAT is a huge change. I'd guess you are headed for a timing chain. This a smallblock, right? If memory serves, you can yank the fuel pump and feel the chain slop through the pump hole. With (CAREFUL!!) a finger, and a wrench back/ forth on the front nut, you should be able to get a feel for the slop. Might want to drain the oil and check for chunks of sprocket (phenolic, or "plastic" chips in the pan)

Did you remove the cap and check the rotor for any kind of damage? I've seen it happen.

Sound's like he rotated the Dist about 45 degrees, if the chain jumped that far wouldn't there be valve/piston contact?

I'd go back & put the marks on 10BTDC #1 compression & with the rotor under #1 terminal turn the vac can so the reluctor/pickup magnet are aligned & go from there.

timing cog?

is that a good term for the gear sprocket device?

by any chance, did you change the plug wires and move them 1 spot over by accident?

That was my first thought. Maybe you did this doing a tune up and never caught it.
