So the car was running fine when you parked it but you had to reset the timing and stuff the next time you started it?
yea
I sure wish people would learn to state facts CLEARLY
You say "now the vacuum advance points......."
Well, since "we" don't know where it USED to point, that statement doesn't mean much
You using ?? what ?? for ignition, points, Mopar ECU, Pertronix, etc? Mallory/ Accell or some home made thing off yer Granpas tractor?
HOW FAR DID YOU move the distributor?
From the sounds of things, and "we" are only guessing, SOMETHING has changed. What kind of upper sprocket (they are NOT gears) are you using?

The timing chain has always been a weak link.I would pop compression on 1 cylinder and check your timing marks to see if they line up.I have my method on checking chains. And monitoring there conditions .Also all the nylon and alum powder .Get into the oil pick up

Only if you have the nylon sprocket and fairly high milage. Steel sprockets and good chain rarely give any problem.

Now now, those are sprockets not gears.

The newer stuff may have better gears sprockets etc .But I had a 74 318 1 owner challenger 40K orig miles .Chain was slapping plastic coming off it.I check any car Im working on by my method. Before chain lets go
Diagnose how bad a timing chain was on scene .Was with pair of gloves grabbing fan belt to move crank pulley.Or socket turning motor if I had the socket. But with distributor cap off observing rotor movement in relation to rotation of the engine.Lets you know it time to replace timing chain by very little lack of rotor movement

Yep plastic sprocket teeth. Potential problem. Once changed out with a good set it is unlikely to happen again.

How would that method tell you if your chain and sprockets were bad? You could have slop at the cam/distributor gear or slop where the distributor shaft meets the drive gear?
There wouldn't be so much slop that the crank would move a good bit before the rotor moved. It is a good way to tell if the timing set is bad.
