Doesn't have to be aluminum; I made mine from some thin plywood (3/16" or 1/4") and it worked fine. In fact, the insulating effect of the wood made it easy to feel on the hood exactly where the plate was underneath --> much cooler to the touch.

It's been a long time since I checked but I remember when I did, I lost 1.2 tenths when I removed it and gained it back replacing the sealed air pan.

Bob, back when I had a six pack hood on the cuda, I made an air pan for it that was VERY similar to yours. It was worth a solid tenth and a little over 1 mph in the 1/4.

That carb spacer is on the way. CHIP

I'm ready for the 1/4 if my converter will lock up, I don't like racing for 6 seconds. 1/2 track Nationals.
