How does the Milodon gear drive compare?
The Milodon set up requires a little drilling and tapping on the block, there are 3 different gear drives avaliable from them for the BB Chrysler,....all are fixed plate drives, not "floaters", or dual idlers, the Milodons are $400 and up depending on application, a Sm Blk plate drive is avaliable also
There's one Cheater BB Chrysler Milodon drive that fits under the stock cover (street use), the small blk fits under the stock cover also, the other BB Milodon gear drives require the Milodon cover and accesories,......these drives are generaly for Marine, fuel injecteted, and Supercharged applications

Still need to do a little grinding on the idler shafts to clear the block face. But that's in the directions and made that way. Yes, it needs and comes with a thrust button. Still unsure about oil slinger.

His PJ came from Summit. They did have the quiet and moisy. He want noisy but its still not real loud.It was an easy onstall.Took little more than doing a timing chain. It needs a thrust button.Directions were great for his.I wouldnt buy one that had to be all ground down to fit.Rocky

Do you recall whether or not you used the oil slinger? My other 66 383 didn't have one from the get go but the block i'm working on now (1965 383) I got as a shortblock and not sure if it originally had one. Seriously, were they just forgotten in some engines? Or is a Late Friday "opps I forgot" type of deal.

Am "I" the only one here? I don't get it. If I had this much trouble getting something like this to fit---something it was already SUPPOSED to fit---I'd either send it back or just install a chain drive

Same here. Just the thrust on the cam gear and checking clearance on idler set. Minimal grinding. But the idler is in the way for the oil slinger to fit unless it's spaced away from the lower crank gear. Really not that much involved. I just decided not to use the slinger. We will see what happens I guess.

I'd recommend either a Milodon plate style, or if you desire the "floater" style, I'd be leary of paying $59 dollars? off Egag fot the "cat" one?,.....I never heard of it,....I've used Jegs gear drives, about $300, Pete Jackson only makes a sm blk Mopar "floater", no big Blk yet?,....you must have a 3 bolt cam in a Bblk application, regardless of the vendor used,....Jegs # are 20360 or 20361 quiet/noisey, www.jegs.com
I've always eliminated the slinger( if you've torn down enough "factory" built motors, you'd be surprised how many forgot the slinger at assy!), no leaks, just put a quality seal in the cover, and grease the seal lip and shaft for start up, never start up on a dry seal, regarding the cam button, yes, that's a must, you must space it properly with the cover so that the cam dosen't have exscessive "walk", during operation
If you take the time to fully understand/and install the drive PROPERLY, you'll never see timing vari, like it can with a chain, and unless your engine has some major trauma in it's life, you'll never need a timing set, I've seen gear drives go 100K miles plus with no issuses

Like any engine componet, it must be fitted to each application, installing a gear drive is no more complicated that installing piston rings,.....unless you know of a source for "pre gapped" rings , they don't fit out of the "box" either,....I don't see the big deal

I was hoping the one you suggested from jegs was a plug and play one???
looks good, whats all involved with that one going in?
Mike, The Jegs unit, like all the others on the market will envolve "grinding" the idler button on the backside of the dual idler, were it makes contact with the block, the reason for "grinding" the idler button is that the floating dual idler gears thrust themselves towards the block when they are rotating, the rear thrust idler, dosen't rotate, the idler gear rotates on the button, under load (high RPM) the dual idler wants to contact the block, determining the proper spacing, by "grinding" the button keeps the gears in line with one another, the upper thrust button on the cam. keeps the cam from walking forward, by contacting the front cover, the cut of the gears, wants them to walk in different directions, thus the purpose of the thrust buttons, while it may sound complicated, it's rather straight forward once you study the parts, and assemble them properly,....the Jegs kit has assorted index bushings for the cam dowel, so that you can index the drives lash/spacing, so as to not put undo stress on the drive/cam/crank,....I wonder if the "cat" kit included this?,.....$59 for a gear drive? ....even a sm blk Chevy quality unit is $200 minimum from PJ

I know this isn't really a productive comment to the thread, but.... I'm in the process of building a big block, and was looking at these cheap gear drives. Ended up deciding that I didn't want a cheapo part in a spot that if it goes bad, the whole motor is likely toast. For about the same money as an import gear-drive, you can get a good quality billet steel double roller chain. I'll stick with the tried & true. After all, the noise is the only thing you're really gaining, no performance to speak of.
