I shifted my old 440 at 6700-6800 and crossed the stripe at the same rpm. Stock block and crank, Manley H beams, and Ross slugs. CHIP

depends on the build.... I had a 383 I'd spin to 7k but that's was a fairly buid motor. As far as a mild street/strip stock crank 440 I'd think 6k would be plenty of rpms.

The current low deck 440 Super Stock engine that I’m running makes power @8500… shift it there and go thru the lights there.

I can answer that , It depends on how hard the wind blows, Any how I am happy to see that the mopar guys at the factory remembered the rest of the head bolts on big blocks and the deep skirt @ the crank looks better for high load apps, are the factory big blocks as far out of machine spec as all the 360s I measured?

heads and cam can make a difference on where a motor pulls to. had a LY rod six pac piston block I shifted for years at 7000 to 7200. That motor is still alive. did have the piston pin combo lightened to 1050 grams! LOL!!!
My 4.5 stroke 542 used to shift at 7200 to 7400 loose harmonic Killed that motor.
Current motor stock crank, aluminum rod motor now 7300 to 7600! all stock blocks

Steve Wann on a normal pass spins his low deck 440 Super Stock engine to 8400 so that seems pretty typical..

close. there are lots of factors. Moon phase, storm activity, winds, etc. and the answer to this question is even more complex but still the same. it depends on what you built.

Unless your able to BS companies out of parts for free.
I shifted my old engine at 6500 and went through the traps at 7200. Haven't got that all sorted out with the new engine yet.

So stock small blocks and stock big blocks spin around the same speed

Well, my stock 383 (stock except for a 4bbl on a DP4B...) was ALL DONE by 5K RPM. Panting and out of breath.

My last 383 (stock longblock w/ cam) spun a #6 rod bearing at an estimated 6K (4.1 gears, 26.5" tire, 50MPH in 1st w/ stock 2.45), but it was tired. Obviously. Now, it's dead.

I'm getting ready to fire the new 383 (stock block/caps with studs, 6.535" I-beam rods, 4.25" crank) in a couple weeks. We'll see if it ever needs to go over six grand (unported stealths, 262 deg. @ .050" roller) or not. If so, probably not by much.

But I'm not planning on spinning it to the moon, although I know a few members on here who report shifting their low decks with 'Source stroker kits at 7K+ RPM.

FWIW

Seduce the attractive, and charm the rest. ****** 489 C.I.D., roller cam, aftermarket heads, tunnel ram, stock '54 Dodge rear axle assembly: which of these doesn't belong?

Mine traps about 6800 to 7000. I shift it at 6500...

That pretty much describes mine: stock block; stock forged 440 crank; aftermarket h-beam rods; aftermarket forged pistons; aftermarket caps; updated oil system.

The bob weight is NOT "light" at 2500 grams, but it is around 300 grams lighter than what it would be using all OEM parts.

For sure,It all depends on what parts you use.

This cast KB motor has been 10400 more than once. It will break valve springs at that RPM but the bottem end lives for any run. I shift it at 9800 and it is real easy to over rev to 10K+ in a split sec. BTW the bob weight on this one is 2250 3.750 stroke 451".500 low deck. Built for RPM, cam makes power from 8800-9800 RPM with 60# of boost. Have two complete motors sitting here.

My factory Mopar block should be good to 9600-9800 RPM, once I get it all figured out. So far, I have "only" had it to 8100 RPM.

(It is a Mopar PS Hemi block)
