I will finally be sandblasting my 'Cuda this week end (weather permitting) and have a bunch of other items to blast as well. I know my car came from the factory with 14" tires and I know the spare tire is a full size 14" as well. My question is: What size was the wheel the spare tire was installed on? I know it was 14" but how WIDE - 5.5" or 6" I have both sizes but only want to blast the one I will be using. I also know that a 5.5" steel wheel was not available on a 440 car - they got the 6" steel wheel and 5.5" rallye wheels (which is what my car has), but what about the spare tire? Anybody know for sure or have a survivor car to look at? Thanks, Rob

w/full size spare wheel/tire in '70 ...

If your 'Cuda came with 14" "road" or "rallye" wheels ..... the spare is 14x5-1/2".
If your 'Cuda came with 14" wheels w/hub caps or wheel covers ..... the spare is 14x6".

HI, thanks. My car came from the factory with 14" rallye wheels, so, I should have the 5.5" spare then according to you? That works for me - thanks, Rob

One more question: I believe the wheel is painted gloss (or satin/flat) black regardless of exterior color? Correct? Rob

It would be a gloss black wheel, of similar quality to the factory exterior finish of a black car.

Since you specified 70, I'm guessing later years are different somehow?

Dan: Are you saying that if the car came with road or rallye wheels, then the spare is also a road or rallye wheel? I would assume so, as the only 14x5.5 steel rim that I know of would be a space saver one. The steel wheels your are referring to must be the 14x6.0 ones, and the spare would then be the same, correct? I know that if a base model Barracuda had 14x5.0 steel wheels, then the spare would also be the same rim.
Back to the 14x6.0" steel wheels. I have an original full size spare that came out of a Challenger R/T car that had 14x6.0 steel wheels. The spare however has a completely different part number stamped above the valve stem hole. I will post a pic. of the part number tonight. What do you know about this Dan?
Thanks for your imput.

I tried to limit confusion by sticking to '70 Cuda. Limiting wheel choices & later 6" "road" & "rallye" wheels.

1970 E-bodies per b'cast sheet:

ROAD - 15 & SPARE - 15 (14x5.0" steel wheels, 5 of them)
ROAD - 15 & SPARE - 81 (14x5.0" steel wheels, space saver spare)
ROAD - 17 & SPARE - 17 (14x6.0" steel wheels, 5 of them)
ROAD - 17 & SPARE - 81 (14x6.0" steel wheels, space saver spare)
ROAD - 61 & SPARE - 16 (14x5.5" "rallye" wheels, 14x5.5" steel spare)
ROAD - 61 & SPARE - 81 (14x5.5" "rallye" wheels, space saver spare)
ROAD - 63 & SPARE - 16 (14x5.5" "road" wheels, 14x5.5" steel spare)
ROAD - 63 & SPARE - 81 (14x5.5" "road" wheels, space saver spare)
ROAD - 28 & SPARE - 81 (15x7.0" steel wheels, space saver spare)
ROAD - 71 & SPARE - 81 (15x7.0" "rallye" wheels, space saver spare)

Does anybody have any engineering drawings that deal with wheels. There has to be some kind of translation that desribes how a wheel part number becomes the 2-digit assembly code on a broadcast sheet.

xxxx x15 is a 2944 236 + what (14x5.0" steel wheel)
xxxx x16 is a 2944 242 + what (14x5.5" steel wheel)
xxxx x17 is a 2944 327 + what (14x6.0" steel wheel)
xxxx x61 is a 2944 252 + what (14x5.5" "rallye" wheel)
xxxx x63 is a 2944 474 + what (14x5.5" "road" wheel)
xxxx x28 is a 2944 450 + what (15x7.0" steel wheel)
xxxx x71 is a 2944 390 + what (15x7.0" "rallye" wheel)
xxxx x81 is a 2944 395 + what (14x5.5" space saver spare)

Dwight, pics would be great!
Anyone with a '70 only Parts Catalog? What are the wheel part numbers in there?

Dan: Here are some pictures of the tire off an all original 70 Challenger R/T with road wheels and a 383+4. Maybe "off" is a bad word, as the tire was the full size spare and had never been used on the car. It was in the trunk and had been since the car was owned new. The part number stamped above the valve stem is: 2944 242. It is dated Sept 16, 1969 on the rim. I have the very same rim with the same part number, the date code is: Nov 10, 1969. My tire is an F70x14 RWL while the one pictured is a Polyglas tire. I think this rim is a 14x5.5 but I do not know how to tell for sure.
I checked my Sept. '69 and May '70 editions of my 1970 parts book. The three numbers you list for 5.0 5.5 and 6.0 steel rims are the same in both editions. The 2944 242 number is not in any of the parts book that I have. I do not believe it wa ever in any parts books. Bill Rolik should chime in here with his comments. He should have some enlightening info. if any one does.

My 70 Chall vert has 14" road wheels and a full size spare in the trunk and on the buildsheet "16". I can check the wheel for the actual part number if you guys want. Parts book has 14x5.5 as 3420977, 14x6 as 3420978. I'll check mine when I have a chance.

Actually now that I think more about the car, it is a 70 383+4 RT/SE burnt orange with burnt orange interior and A/C. Here is a somewhat hazy picture of the date code on the tire.

It would be great to confirm weather that #2944 424 is the 5.5" or 6.0" wheel, can't you just dismount it a little?

Can you compare it with a known dismounted steel wheel? The 1/2" is noticable where the center is welded to the hoop.

2944 242 is 5.5 inches, I compared and measured it vs a 6.0 steel wheel and a 5.5 space saver rim. I have a FEW 14x6.0 steel wheels with the following part number stamped above the valve stem hole: 2944 327. The overwhelming majority of 14x6.0 steel wheels that I have have no seven digit part number stamped o them.

Are there any dates on the wheels w/o part numbers?
Are the ones with the 2944 327 part number all early or late?

I've updated the list above, now it looks like all we need is the uber-big-dollar 5.0" wheels! I have 4 from a '70 A93 car that I purchased for the /6 "pilot", they're in Ohio, I'll see if someone can look at them tomorrow.

Any help with the paperwork and/or ASSEMBLY numbers?

Are those first 2 "blurry" tire digits "JP"? - July '69

Great info guys. I actually have a 5.0 steel wheel that I believe is dated 9/69, but don't hold me to that. I can dig it out and look at the number if anybody wants me to? At any rate, I'm glad I now know which steel wheel I need to use for my spare. Thanks, Rob

One is dated Aug 6, 1969, two are dated Feb 9 and 10, 1970 and two are dated Aug. 6, 1970. So, I would assume from that that they were made throughout the 1970 and 1971 production year. Comments?

Dan, what are the dates on the four 14x5.0 steel wheels that you have? I have a mess of them as well. What is the SPD of your pilot car?

Any help with the paperwork and/or ASSEMBLY numbers?

The pics of the 14x5.5 steel wheel were from a car in Denver, CO. so I have no way to check. Sorry.
