This will blow your mind but it is FACT.

The factory always did a halfass job boring the cam tunnel. They didn't really care...because the OEM cam bearings were WAY undersized, they then line-bored (precision) the BEARINGS.

Now you know why all the old MP manuals suggest not changing the cam bearings unless absolutely necessary!

About all you can do is use a bearing knife or an old cam with sharp grooves to act as a reamer.

When you think about it, they are not really bearings, they are bushings...

Lots of good ideas here--let me add my 2 cents worth
I do a lot of Mopars every year and have found that the HP series of Cam bearings made by Durabond usually fit better than other brands--when held up to the light you can see where they have gone in and "leveled" them where the oil holes were punched. These have really made a big difference in our shop. I still get a trouble maker every now and then and came up with a simple way to work on the high spots--take an old cam, install it and then using a brass or aluminum piece give it a hammer blow ( directly on the old cam ) on both sides of the tight journal--sometimes it works like magic to free up a tight one. I also use an old cam with some grooves in it--I have never had any luck with Clevite bearings--Great info from Mike and Rick

Like Von said, take an old junk cam and make a diagonal hacksaw cut in each journal then spin it as you push it through the bearings, the cuts will ream the high spots in the bearings.

I second what john shows. Have been doing it this way for 40 years. No problem yet.

I'm convinced, I am going to diagonally slot an old cam & also use it as mentioned to tap the offending bearing from both sides to square it up

Nice idea. I'll try this myself. Do you make these cuts straight down, or is the hacksaw blade held on an angle to get some kind of cutting edge? Also, who distributes these HP cam bearings mentioned? Thanks!

My new (in 99) Mopar block, came without cam bearings,so I knew that a special tool was needed to install them so I took it to a local Mopar Racer machinst and he put the new bearings in a trial fit a cam. It did not turn, he spent about 20 minutes with a die makers knife scraping the bearings until it fit..
Point of the story is the new blocks are no better than the vintage stuff..

Sounds like I'm not the only one whose ever had a tight cam.
I like to try new things so I tried the bearing scrape on the shiny spots. I was pretty tentative in how much I took off so I had the cam in and out about a dozen times.
The cam turns easily now.
I for one appreciate all the advice that was offered. I'll send up another distress call if I come up with more issues.
Thanks
Roy

My cam with new cam bearings was tight too, so I tried this. It worked like a charm, but it scraped them more than I thought it would, though I only turned it around a few times. #3 needed alot of clearancing apparently. The groove I made in the cam was full of bearing material. the shavings off the bearings spun around with the cam and made grooves and scratches. They don't look pretty to me....Another set of cam bearings maybe?
