the noisy resonance depends on the temperature & pressure of the exhaust gas too (for geeks: actually the speed of sound for that gas condition)
Good post. My charger had it bad when it was running lean. Once I got the fuel mix to where the engine was most happy it was much quieter, but not completely gone. I figure the exhaust was cooler and more dense shifting the natural frequency of the pipes.

I just changed the exhaust on the Dart. Went from a 2 1/2 inch with an H pipe and Flowmasters to 3 inch with an X pipe and DynoMax Ultraflows. Both dumped in front of the axle.
Picked up 2 tenths and 2 mph but the exhaust note is somewhat quieter and the bass is gone. I miss the bass sound. I guess this is the drone being talked about.
But this is a bracket car. It would probably drive me deaf if it were a car I drove alot.

I had that somewhat even with an H-pipe. Switched to an X-pipe. That fixed it. I like the tone now, too. Can hardly hear the exhaust from within the car at cruise.
I have a Summit system on my Duster (Factory manifolds with 2.5" duals with Summit mufflers & talpipes) and since I changed the rear axle ratio (2.45 -> 3.55) 2 days ago the car drones so bad on the highway after a one hour drive I can't stand it.
Will try a H or X pipe first to see if that changes the frequency point.
One step forward with the gears, 3 back with new exhaust drone, new driveshaft vibration and new alternator howl at cruise rpm.

I have the same problem with a 440-6 69 Roadrunner, factory cast iron manifolds, new TTI exhaust system for the rest. The system resonates inside the car so badly you almost cannot drive it. I was told to replace the mufflers with "hemi mufflers", whatever that means. When I restored my Challenger (383, stock), I promised myself to never do the TTI thing again. I used a stock system from Accurate Exhaust. Beautiful. Sounds like it did originally. When I get around to re-doing my Roadrunner, that TTI crap will go in the trash in favor of a stock muffler and resonator system.
A buddy of mine purchased the TTI kit also and it has horrible drone with full exhaust out the back.

I have a stock style 2 1/2 system with Hemi style mufflers. It was surprisingly loud and had a bad drone around 2000 rpm. Installed 4 inch magnaflow glass packs as resonators. Sound is fantastic now. Drone is gone. Nice muscle car thump at idle but not outrageous at WOT. Worked out great.
Wish that was an option for me, darn A-body.

You can supposedly install these anywhere and they will work. Even in front of the mufflers like the truck guys. I have a crossover exhaust on my Trans Am and I had an H pipe on my truck and they still drone. Not sure sure if they are properly located but sometimes you don't have to many location choices. As I said, the is my wife's car and she wanted in quiet and I wanted a cheap guarranted fix.
