We have an oil gauge that won't work in a 69 Superbee. You can put a ground to it and the needle moves up, but hook up the correct way and nothing happens. We have tried three different new sending units, the big bulbuous kind, and none seem to work. Could it be something in the cluster wiring or trace?

Did you hook a test light to the sender wire to see if it blinks. If it does try grounding the wire and then turning on the key. Watch to be sure if the gauge moves up you don't allow it to peg or you will burn out the gauge. Are the threads on the sender and block clean?

Agreed. This is the best down and dirty test. You can do it at the sender terminal with the sendor connected. If your test light doesn't start flashing, based on what else you have tried, you have a wiring problem, I'd guess the bulkhead connector..

Do the other gauges work (not counting the amp gauge)?

The gauges operate at 5V. There is a voltage limiter plugged into the gauge cluster. Use the test light as mentioned above to see if it blinks. If it does the voltage regulator is working. The sender wire is just a resistance pathway to ground. Use the nub from the back of the gauge that connects to the printed circuit board to test for power and blinking. You can put 12V to it for a short time (no pun intended) to check gauge functionality. I am assuming this is a Rallye dash. The ohms readings of the gauge are 72 ohms low, 23 ohms mid and 10 ohms high.

Something doesn't make sense.. confused
If the guage needle moves up when the under the hood sending unit wire is grounded, means that the voltage limiter is working and the guage is OK.
The sending unit is a variable resistor that adjusts the voltage to the guage, do not use any teflon tape on the sending unit
as then it will not be grounded.

Just my $0.02... wink

silly question,
have you verified the oil pressure with a known good mechanical gauge? that would be the first step.

number 2 would be to check the resistance reading at the sending unit with the motor running
keep us posted beer
