Car weighs 2820, 2975 with me in it. It has about 55% weight on the front, 45% rear. Right now, the rear coils are 150 lb units, adjusted about 25% up from the bottom. Its a '66 Satellite that has 'glass hood, trunk lid, bumpers, lexan windows, gutted as much as I could.

wow you're very close to my weight & my strange double adjustables just arrived today. only difference is i have the 130lb springs as the chassisman suggested. keen to hear what the recommendations are for your combo. so come'on dudes. 'fess up. what do we set these shocks to as a ballpark starter?

The way I do it is to set compression full tight and extension full loose, make a couple of base line passes then increase(depending on how much data you want) the extension one click per pass until you see a increase in 60' times.(optimally you will see a decrease in 60' times then a plateau then a increase. Then do the same for compression. Starting at the extremes allows only one direction of change to be made (no wrong way). A full loose extension allows the suspension to act as quickly as possible, but probably too quick, upsetting (shocking) the suspension when the shock absorber comes to the end of travel, therefore slowing the extension will lessen the amount of ("upset") at the end of travel and keep the tires planted The same is true for compression as well, a stiff compression setting may keep the tire planted but also tend to bounce the rear tires on transitions/bumps in the track, so the object is to find the setting that lets the shock absorber react to the surface and not hamper traction. So for compression make passes and loosen the setting one click per pass, noting 60' and ET per change, stop when the quickest 60' and Et are achieved. Thats how you get an optimal setting. I would run a couple of weeks then (keeping the same settings) try some different settings and see how things change also make sure that you are running the proper spring rate and have the shocks at proper installed hight(aproximatly mid travel)

IMO, that is way too much rear spring.
what does 25% mean?? You should be measuring the spring. I don't screw more then 1" of preload into mine.

My car is 2961 with me in it and I am running 130lb springs on the rear
...and try not to add any more than that 1" of compression on the spring...dont use spring platforms to adjust ride height....use the shock brackets.... ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif)

Bob, On my Cuda w/ Strange double adjustables i am at 3 clicks from full soft on extension and 4 clicks from full soft on compression. We 60 foot 1.32 in Toon town, and ran a 1.29 and 1.30 in Yorkton with the same settings... I say start soft and stiffen up 1 click at a time until the 60 foot gets worse. On a sticky track you can definitely tighten up the extension, but not at SIR ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bawling.gif) cheers, Arnie

25% was a rough guess of how much I have the spring adjusted up. I just went out and measured it, I have 4 1/2 inches of thread on the shock, and the adjuster is up approximately an inch. The shocks have 16 inches between the top mounting bolt, and the bottom mounting bolt, which is roughly middle of the travel. 150 lb springs were recommended by the place that sold me the shocks. Could the 150's be to much, maybe 130's would be better? How do you tell? Any more information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Bob

Even 130's sound heavy for your car being under 3000 with you in it. Unless its really heavy on the back. Alot of us are running 110's on cars that are in that 3000 lb range.

basically the spring is there to hold the car up. You want you eye to eye distance to fall within the recommended ride height. What shock do you have, you mention 4.5" travel, that would be 2005 and has a recommended ride ht of 13-14". Scaling the car is good info but testing is the best. I tested 6 sets of springs on my Dart before settling into 120lb Eibach springs. I started out using QA1 cause they were cheap but will never again. You get what you pay for, and even good springs aren't all the expensive.
edit: don't pay any attention to how much threaded body there is on the shock. YOu need to know extended length. Put it on the car and see where the ride ht is.

OK....pull the shocks off the car.....take all the tension off of the shock platforms til the spring is free and loose....measure the length of the spring with no pre-load on it...then turn the platforms up til you compress the spring 1"...then lock down the platforms.Install the shocks on the car....with the car at race weight measure from bolt center to bolt center on the shock.Compare this measurement with that supplied by the shock manufacturer.....if the distance is too close you need a stiffer spring....if it's too far apart you need a softer spring...this is how you determine spring rate...do not use the platforms to adjust that distance it defeats the purpose of testing your appropriate spring rate.A lot of guys monkey around with the platforms to achieve what they want...but in most of the cases this can lead to other issues....just think...you actually worry about coil bind in the valvetrain...but if you jack up the platforms you may end up battling coil bind in your suspension. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif)

These shocks are the S5007 models, extension length 19.52", compression length 12.64", recommended ride height 15.25-16.00", stroke 6.88", suggested spring length 14".
Mine are at 16" which is at the upper limit of ride height. This weekend I will take them off and do as chassisman recommended, compress it one inch and see where the ride height is.

The guys have said how to set the springs but to your question on the shock setting, you will need a fairly stiff extension setting... ladder bars really try to separate the body and chassis unlike a 4-link where you can set the IC to get the body to squat or raise ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)
