i own a original engine/trans 1968 charger hemi made march 4 1968 and my car never came with the green vaccumn valve back of manifold. i believe 1969 hemi cars had valve and all california emission car 1968-9 had green valve my car original I llinois car for all its life

My 68 GTX 440 4 spd had one of the green thingys. It's missing from my hemi.

The green CAP valve was put on all 68-69 Hemi engines no matter which trans it had. There is a picture of a 68 HEMI GTX conv. in Car Life Feb. '68 road test that clearly shows the valve in place. I also have a picture of a NEW 68 Hemi Coronet R/T that was in a 68 vintage magazine that shows the crew replacing the fact dist with a Mallory unit and you can clearly see the CAP valve in the pictures. The mounting bracket is unique to hemi's, but you can use a valve from a 383/ slant 6 one and replace the bracket with a repro hemi one.

The '69 Charger R/T I posted isn't a California car. I don't think it's a Cali-thing..... Also, Carl's '69 is an unrestored car he bought off the original owner. He's had the car since I believe '76... So, it's definitely not a 4-speed thing either....

I agree..... I also see from the markings that the bracket was bolted in place, on the intake and painted with the motor. Then, the green valve was positioned and the "V" part of the bracket grimped around the valve...

I HAVE A NOS ONE IN A BOX WHICH IS GOING ON MY HEMI ROADRUNNER.it states that it is for both manual and automatic cars, they call it a USED CAR CLEANER AIR PACKAGE or vacuum advance control valve.
it states when the engine idling in nuetral adjust the idle speed at 650 for automatic cars and 700 rpms with manual transmission.
so now we are sure it is for both trans. carsit also is used on 6 cylinder cars as well 695rpm with auto.trans 745 rpm with manual.

"The green can thingy" and at least a dozen other names it has been given over the years...

Time for another re-hash... same questions:

1) What years installed by factory?

2) Manual only, or both manual & automatic?

3) For all states?... Entire production run for each year?

Any new info... I was told there were some recent articles in some Mopar magazines...???

My 68 RR has its original green "thingy" back on and it seems to work OK. Second owner took it off when he raced the car but was a pack rat and kept everything - bonus for me... I've heard the usual stories from back in the day that those were usually tossed early on. The Factory Service Manual has instructions for testing/tuning and I seem to recall that mine was still operating as it should. These are some shots from several years ago when the motor was on the stand.

One thing I forgot to add was that my RR is a late 68 build - May timeframe and has the auto trans. The motor was assembled early 68.

does anyone know how late the green emissions cannister was used on 68 model hemis, i am prety sure the early 68 hemis did not have them




My car was built in 0ct of 68 and it has one.
