Talked with several members asking about the AMX I bought rom Tom (AMXAutoX) last April so I thought I’d post an update.

After some serious medical issues about the time I bought the car from Tom I was finally able to get up to Washington in early August. A buddy from Yakima picked up the car along with some of the parts and another buddy from the Olympia area picked up the remainder of the parts. As part of the deal I purchased the open trailer Tom had for transporting the car to and from Autox events.

Got the car home where I immediately put on a good coat of wax and some tire dressing to protect the tires. I then covered the car up unit the temps were more reasonable. This past summer we has over 100 days straight of 110 temps.

Once the temp subsided I did an initial assessment of the car. It had been stored most of the time since around 1999 so I treated it as a new build. I did a breakin of the engine and changed all the fluids

Other things I’ve done to date

Had the bucket seats recovered. They are Corvette C3 seats. The jury is still out on keeping these seats.

Pretty much leave the drive train alone. The motor was freshen up around 1999 so no reason to mess with it. It has a scatter shield along with the stock T-10. I’m considering putting the stock bell housing back on. I also purchased a rebuilt Hurst tower in that I’m having issues downshifting to second gear.

As far as suspension the car is pretty solid however it looks like the rubber bushings are showing some age so I may freshen those up. I’ll probably stick with rubber vs polygraphite.

The rear is the stock AMC20 with the two piece rear axles, the twin grip with 3.54s. I bought a set of 3.31s along with the axle conversion for the AMC20. Given I drivea lot on the freeways the higher gears will help. I do plan on a TKX 5 speed conversion down the road.

I bought some new tires putting them on the 15x7 and 15x8 Magnums Tom gave me. When I picked the car up it had 14x7 Magnums with tires that were over 20 years old. They were actually in really good shape however with the temps here in Phoenix I decided to change over for safety’s sake. I freshen up the front brakes with new rotors and pad that Tom gave me. A brake upgrade in the near future is being considered.

I’m planning on taking the car to Springfling with a detour over to Willow Springs for the open track day. I’d like to run it around the track to see how it handles. With all the mods on the car, Tom correct me if I’m wrong but it looks like he was leaning toward making more of a track car. Not knowing what went into the motor as far as mods such as bearing clearances, oiling mods etc. I’ll take it easy. As far as external oil mods it has a remote filter, oil cooler and oil returnlines to keep the sump full of oil.

As far as running some of the local tracks I did join SCCA which allows me to running two open tracks on our area.

Iirc there's overdrive gears for the T10. And, I'd think about lower gears in the rear if adding OD.

I like the AMC paint jobs of that era but the tail stripe just seems weird.

I'm pretty sure the tail stripe you're seeing is a shadow.

Yup, that's a shadow - see OP's photos at the start of the thread.
Nice to see Tom's car being cared for, attaboy on that.
3.54 to 3.31 will be barely noticeable, but the axle mod sounds like a good idea.
AMC motors had oil circulation issues in competition, but are OK on the street.
I recall articles on the fix for that - Traco on the Penske TA cars, and an engine build in Hot Rod.

Yeah, when I delved into the motor or I noticed a lot of oil lines. Lines from the oil pump adapter to the remote, lines to the oil cooler and back, two oil lines from the each valve cover draining accumulated oil at the top of the head to the oil pan. My only concern with driving on the street is the low oil pan and those oil line connections to the pan. So far no issues with speed bumps.

Tom gave me a slew of documents to include a lot of tech info. I’m seeing where he incorporated a lot of those oiling mods above and beyond hat of an autocross car. More of a slant toward road racing.

Those are such fun cars.

A good friends Dad had one that I used to wrench on.

The little 390 was plenty stout!

Heya buddy -- long time, I know. Do you know Rick Guisto? He has two AMXs in Chandler and autocrosses his '71 Challenger. If you don't know him, I can introduce y'all.

Oh yeah, I know Rick. He came by the house last month to pickup some AMC parts I gave him. We talked quite a bit about his AMX. Good guy.
