Are there any "Old School" key and lock places near you? We had one in my hometown and he did re-keying of old locks.

I've heard but never confirmed that cop cars often had a single key setup.

The blanks are different so you would need to be creative.

. this is correct. if i remember correctly they used the round trunk key for the 1 key setup.

70 E-body, but it's same issue on all of them. I see the key blank between ignition and trunk is different. Any way to mod, or swap a different cylinder for the trunk so the same key can be used? Heard it was a patent issue with Toyota that forced them to use 2 keys. At what point did they switch to 1, maybe that year cylinder would work?
Thx Doubtful Toyota had anything to do with this. More likely it's a valet concern. They can have the key for the ignition and door, but not the trunk. As mentioned, cop cars had that as an option. IF you can find a vehicle that uses the same trunk lock cylinder as your E body AND it had a cop car option you MIGHT be able to find an NOS cop car trunk lock, get it rekeyed to match your other locks and there you go.

Thx A door lock will go into a 70 opening, since same size & retainer will work. But not 72 & newer, larger lock. BUT, trunk locks have the return spring at the rear, door locks no. Maybe a 70/71 cuda trunk setup could be swapped/improvised to work. Ign/door & trunk keys all have different profile shapes thru the years, and can be swapped/inserted. Probably not worth the work unless for some reason necessary.

Thx Toyota? I doubt that. Mopar has had 2 keys for years in the 60s-70s -80s. One key for doors and ignition and the other for the trunk and glove box. That started way before Toyota had much of a presence here in the states. Ford and gm had the ignition key (only) with the other one fitting everything else on their cars at the same time. At least with Mopar they made the doors and ignition the same

Just thinking outside the box here but why not just remove the small side cover on the lock and empty it out... Any key that turns it will open it... As long as no one knows that you should be fine...

It was the standard for decades for various makes to have 2 keys so that if you had to leave your key with someone you could keep the glove box and trunk secure. I don't know when things changed but well into the 2000s they still did something similar with the valet key that could do everything the normal one could except open the glove box and trunk.

Another reason I think this is to prevent you or someone from mistakenly or accidentally locking your trunk key in the trunk is they also made the driver/s door so you could only lock it from the outside with the ignition key. Love/hate with that driver's door can only be locked from the outside with the ignition key. But then again you can only blame yourself with a Chevy, Ford, etc., if you lock your ignition key inside the car, Oh and also the separate trunk key was great for valet parking so no one but the trunk key holder could get into the trunk where the wife liked keeping her purse, etc.,

At least on E-Bodies starting in 1971 you can push the door lock lever down and close the door and the car is locked. I'm pretty sure it was done on all model Mopars starting in 71.

As long as no one knows that you should be fine... Not a bad idea. I did try and put the ignition key in the trunk cylinder, and that's when I looked closer and saw the blanks are different.

Yeah it had nothing to do with Toyota. It was the standard for decades for various makes to have 2 keys so that if you had to leave your key with someone you could keep the glove box and trunk secure. I think it was so if you mistakenly locked your (trunk) key in the trunk you would still have an ignition key to drive home and hopefully have a spare at home. But EVERYONE had the trunk and ignition on one key ring or key fob DUH that's a too smart engineer thinking as they would do the two key ring key fob. Makes me wonder if the dealerships were ever instructed to give the owners the keys at purchase on two key rings. Probably there's a dealer new car delivery packet with the keys on separate key rings. So having a different key for the glove box is so you don't accidentally lock the key in there? Hmmmmmm maybe also valet resistant? And don't forget the center console..........and being able to lock and unlock them with another key while the ignition key is in and running the engine/driving.
