What bolts and nuts are you using for B/RB OEM chrome valve covers? I've tried to find stainless/chrome hardware and so far I've found nothing but flange style bolts and nuts in stainless or chrome, not the captive washer style hardware. Thoughts?

I would imagine a acorn style nut. I found these but not polished stainless. Should be able to find it if you dig deeper.

I should have been more specific, my bad. What OEM style nuts and bolts are you using for OEM B/RB chrome valve covers? I have spent over three hours looking for something and so far all my digging has gotten me is a dry hole! grin

I don't have the chrome covers, but Classic Industries (among others) sell the OEM style bolts - $ 10.99 each !
Studs & nuts for the ends, plus the bolts, $30 on Ebay.

For non-resto covers, I use studs & nuts all around.

ACE Hardware here has real chrome plated fasteners. They do look very very nice despite the stiff price tag.

Likely going to be a task to find anything with a captured washer at a hardware store.

Grainger has lots of hardware if you have one locally, but they lean toward selling in bulk quantities on some things. Cool if you need 100 of something, but not so cool if you need only 20.

Last year I bought some misc stuff from Bolt Depot that I could not find locally. https://boltdepot.com/Catalog If you want to use studs for your covers buy some individual socket set screws from here and put SS or chrome plated nuts on them.

Socket screws are also called grub screws as well.

I forgot about Fastenal. We have one here, but it's way on the south side of town by the airport otherwise I'd use them more often. I dislike having to order small things like fasteners as the shipping is often as much or more than the actual items, but sometimes it's that or go without.

I'll have to go and dig thru the bolts , valve covers have been off for almost 19 years now and I don't remember if the chrome covers on my BB a body had painted or chrome .. I think they were chrome though ??

My original 383 had stock painted bolts on my factory chrome valve covers, but I have seen chrome bolts too...

I really appreciate all the effort going into this post. Now I'm not going to say I'm 100% right but if I have it correct, the B/RB engines with stock chrome covers were the 1965 426 standard, the 1967 440 in the GTX, and the 383 in the 1969 Dart 383. There may be others, I don't know.

A trip through the 1965 parts book under 9-3-28 shows different numbers for the 426 standard valve covers so I am going assume they are chrome. Like wise the 1967 parts book listing is for high performance which I would believe are the chrome covers. The 1969 parts book calls out specific covers for the B2/L2 which I assume are the chrome covers.

But in no listing I can find chrome bolts or nuts listed, just one version in '65 of both that I assume are the unplated hardware. In fact in '67 and '69 I can't even find the bolts listed, just the nuts.

So based on Jim's comments I am going to decided on a path for plated or stainless hardware and go from there. Thanks to all again for the effort.

I'm pretty sure my '67 GTX 440 had plated VC bolts - but that was decades ago.
It was an untouched original car.
Painted fasteners for them would have driven me nuts (pardon the pun) laugh2

So one thing nobody asked was when the engines were painted at the engine plant did they have standard steel valve covers and bolts on them then changed out for the chrome covers afterwards? work

My guess is that the VCs were masked off, like the Hemis were.
I can't imagine swapping stuff back & forth would be efficient in mass production.

I don't know. Looking at the picture of your Dart it looks like the lower front fastener is a bolt rather than a stud and a nut. I'm not even going to go down that rabbit hole. I have enough trouble keeping Dave straight!

The first thing I noticed in your picture is the use of bolts on the lower bolt position , there is usually studs/nuts in the corners so I would imagine they would have masked off the valve covers as mentioned and the bolts/nuts, if not chrome, would be black phosphate and not painted ?

That's interesting , I'll have to look at the heads from my dart , I took them off and bagged them as they were. I can't remember now if it had studs or not , maybe the chrome valve cover called out for all chrome plated bolts because they didn't have chrome studs and nuts ? I magine if they were just black phosphate that they would be the combination of bolts and studs ???

I won't go into that orange bolt head holding the black painted alt. bracket , that one shouldn't be engine color wink
