This reminds me of the idiots who think prefilling a new oil filter w/ new unfiltered oil is bad for the engine.

WOW! Thanks for posting that link. Ive used some of the old when it was handy and always thought about buying some of the old off ebay but now...hmmm.

I dont know about running old oil, never tried. I do know when I put some 20w-50 in with 10w-30 and saw a lot more metal shavings come off on the magnetic plug. Next change went back to all 10w-30 and shavings went back to normal. Same warm ups. Same street driving on mostly the same loop I always run to stay away from traffic.

I know a lot of guys run 20w-50 and it’s all I see on the shelves so I suppose that’s what sells. It’s harder to pump at start up and that’s when wear is worst.

The most important thing is to make sure you have oil.

If you don't have any, as in an "Oh $#!+, there's a hole in the oil pan" situation most of us have faced at one time or another, the age of the stuff on the shelf is totally irrelevant.

Yes, unbelievably! There was a big discussion on the internet and somebody did a YouTube test on it. Some people actually believe that if you prefill the oil filter it's bad for the engine upon initial startup. Their rationale is that the oil that you pour into the filter goes into the engine without having gone through the filter media yet. Whereas if you leave it empty, the oil pump will pick up oil from the pan and send it through the filter before it goes into the oil galleries. They seem to disregard the fact that the oil that you poured in there is brand new and does not yet need filtering, and are oblivious to the fact that some of the oil being circulated bypasses the filter at times.
How how this kind of thinking gets started is beyond me.

Yep, go in to get a few jugs of oil and when asked if they can help you just say your wanting the oil with the metal shaving additive so one can verify there oil filter is actually working.

My surprise is not so much how it gets started vs how entrenched they are in a concept they can't rationally explain or even question in the least amount.
