So a few weeks back, I became the proud owner of an old Plymouth gasser project. I was cleaning it out from its garage hibernation of 40 years and one of the items in the trunk as a Darrell Young's Racing Transmissions torque converted. The name and a crudely written “11in 2500 rpm” on the box with a couple flex plates. Would it be good for a street car or should I just pop it in the for sale section. It would be nice to use it, but if I can’t, that’s just as fine. Any ideas or suggestions for it?

He was pretty popular in SoCal for quite a while, and had a good reputation.
Don't know if he/they are still in business.
11" & 2500 stall says "mild-ish performance street" to me, but for what torque/hp input ?
One could guess it's related to that car, of course.

It may depend on how old it is. Converters have gotten significantly more efficient over the decades, which is a great help for street use and higher stalls.

1970 Plymouth 'Cuda #'s 440-6(block in storage)currently 493" 6 pack, Shaker, 5 speed Passon, 4.10's
1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible 408 Magnum EFI with 4 speed automatic overdrive, 3800 stall lock-up converter and 4.30's (closest thing to an automatic 5 speed going)

I would bet the convertor would be easier to put into use than the car. up

IMO the best thing you could do with that vert is toss it in the dumpster or roll the dice and use it yourself. To me its just not worth the risk of dated tech that was always sketchy in that era. Even the modern $200-$300 rebuilt/worked over slightly higher stall units sold on ebay would be better as it would be tested and have a warranty of some sort.

You did good enough on that score not to risk the next guy foolishly killing a good trans.

But im wrong often. whistling

Thanks guys. Not sure if I would use an ancient converter after thinking about it, so off it goes to discount parts bin at the next swap meet or something.

It’s got a drain plug. Add a quart of clean mineral spirts or kerosene and roll it around and drain it.

If the fluid comes out clean use it. You don’t mention what engine you are using - stall speed could vary 1000 rpm between various engines.

With a drain plug it has to be pre 76. Likely has decent parts in it.

I have several big and small engines waiting their time for building, so it would have gone in either.

I remember a guy named Darrel (CRS last name blush) that was a Mopar drag racer that lived in the Riverside, CA area of SO CA,I think he was a line mechanic at one of the Mopar car dealerships in that area and did side work on customers stuff after getting off, I think he specialized in tranny and maybe converter works also. It wouldn't surprise me that he may have worked with Munsinger for his converter work work shruggy
I'm thinking he drag raced a black SB Duster.
I used to see him, I think it was him, at Bob Mazzolini shop on Saturday morning picking up parts shruggy
