Replacing the power steering rack and pinion for the second time on my wife's 2001 Chrysler Town & Country LTD. To refresh the job, I went on youtube and several of them suggested or even said you have to replace the power steering fluid reservoir as a bad reservoir is a common cause of a power steering rack and pinion failure. I think I did replace it the last time in 2020 when the original failed but not certain. I'm going to replace the one on the van now just to avoid any issues (only $37) but I never heard of one causing an issue but "I heard it on the internet so it must be true" wink wink It's a major job for me at least so far to replace the power steering rack and pinion so I'll do it for the $37.

what usually causes the rack to go bad ?
as a big advocate of minivans, i have never had to replace a rack, but have replaced a few rack hoses, as well as hoses for the remote pump reservoir.
my mileages range from my current "bus" [a 1999] having almost 200k on it, to way over 325k on a 1995 version, to several others having way over 100k.
i understand there is a filter of sorts at the return line inside the pump reservoir, but have never torn apart a pump reservoir to inspect the internals.
i did replace a pump at one time due to a leak at the seal for the pulley shaft, but that pump still worked as it should, except for the bad seal slinging power steering fluid all over the place.
just my personal life experience with minivans i have personally owned, fixed/repaired for others, and bought, cleaned up, and flipped.
your mileage will vary.

When I worked at a Dodge dealership in the '05 - '10 era, rack replacements on the minivans were fairly common.
IIRC, it was a "notchiness" in the steering feel that would cause customers to bring them in.
I can't recall if they were also replacing the pumps, but I'd think it's a good idea if there's debris (filings) in the system.
I'd flush the lines as well, if any debris is found.

TSB # 19-001-02 talks about replacing the reservoir due to a moan or groan noise. I heard about issues with the screen as mentioned above. For $30 I'd be putting one in. Might want to think about a Mopar part to be sure it addresses the issues. This is what's in the bulletin 04743012AA. They also mention ATF+4

I think a flush would be good enuf. Just a side note. My 94 Neon has the original rack, pump and reservoir with 560,000 miles on it. I think what kills racks is lack of flush and fluid changes. I did mine every 100,000.

If the OP is going to replace the reservoir just because, I would also replace both hoses for the same reason. If there are metal shavings floating around in the system that he believes could have caused the rack failure, there are probably better chances of them getting caught up in the hoses.

What I'm not hearing is how many miles have passed since the new rack was installed. Some aftermarket racks don't last as long as the OEM racks did. Anything replaced during Covid is a crap shoot.

The original OE power steering rack lasted 19 years and 155,000 miles in the wife's 2001 Chrysler T&C LTD/3.8L. Replaced in 2020 with a "remanufactured" PS rack and pinion and maybe 10k miles and no waring (noise, whining, or bad feel or issues) and just sitting in the driveway, got a call and didn't want to drive so I sat there for five minutes talking. Hung up and went to turn onto the street and no power steering. Back in and check and ps fluid pouring out of the passenger's side of the rack with a completely blown main seal? Remaining PS fluid looked fairly clean and no metal shavings and what was left in the reservoir and internal screen was also clean. Friend at the local Advance Auto and the manufacture replaced it FOC as a "defective" part without a receipt. It's back on with a new reservoir and fluid as of last night or a few hours ago. Working fine so far, knock on wood. Dang it was a heck of a job. Well mostly because I also decided to change both lower control arms. outer tie rods, body rubber mounts, and found a small leaking in one of the brake lines from rust or corrosion or I tweaked it by accident? Taking the rack fluid lines off and putting them back is a be-ach as you have to take the entire EVAP system off and only have a 5"x3" window to get at the line nuts.

Working on cars was fun. The older I get, the less fun it is these days. And forget that "new" stuff, things have really tight areas to work on stuff, in them!
