Guessing it's one of those instances where he doesn't want work from the general public but still wants to build motors. The secrecy is dumbfounding though.

Well, there's working on what you want to do vs. answering the phone & fielding questions... I can understand it being kind of an insider deal. I know plenty of guys like that. Pick and chose what they want to do and who they want to do it for. Cuts out the drama.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

The general public can be exhausting for a small shop. Somebodyin the business once told me they deal with a lot of "ask-holes" and window shoppers that like to talk more than listen. You can't blame a guy for going underground.
My engine builder politely asked me "don't send anyone over here that is cheap or stupid" lol

I had a customer who knew absolutely zero about building an engine for a non matching numbers 440. I tore the engine down, inspected everything, got all the part numbers and prices. Got with my local machine shop and got an estimate on cleaning, boring, cam bearings, valve job on heads and decking block and heads slightly. Price agreed for parts and machine work was around $1500.. While engine block and heads were at machine shop after I dropped them off, said customer calls up the machine shop and says don't worry about the washing, valve job or either decking. Machine shop guy calls me and said he wasn't happy about any of it.So I called my customer and ask him what was up and he said he could take care of those items himself. So I paid my machine shop guy for what time he had in it, picked all it up and sat it in front of my garage door. Called the customer and told him to come get his parts. Told him I wouldn't work on it and he didn't owe me anything. . He absolutely cried, his wife called me every bad word in the book, it wasn't worth it. I can work on GOOD customers stuff. Birdtracker

This is why i will not build or sell engines to/for people. Running your own business sounds like a real pain in the azz. Drag racing is a dying sport similar to private aviation I do everything I can to support local Mopar drag racers by doing what I do on motor building to help keep our local tracks open for me to be able to race on
