Beware Moparts members using Classified Ads.

Has anyone dealt with Robert Nelson with 515 area code from central Iowa?

He responded to my Parts Wanted Ad with a text message that he has the side view mirrors I’m looking for (I don’t know if he is a member or not).

After receiving photos and details, I send him Zelle payment for $250 and he claims to ship the NOS mirrors to me the next business day. Two weeks later, still no tracking, no return correspondence from him. I’m ghosted!

Parts Wanted on other forums is a fertile ground for scammers. I've stopped posting ads because of the bulk quantities I get every time i try to post.

Yupp! This is a good idea! I did try to help by calling the number I was given and had a couple of questions for the OP...I sent him a pm but he has not responded..

Not sure your title here is accurate or fair.
As nothing you have shared indicates the creep is "on this board" IMO.
Sound smore like an opportunist crook got your contact info and allowed you to believe he is at the least a member here in order to send him money.
This was preventable I suspect, your sharing it will help the next guy hopefully be more careful.

Simple: if the person is a member here, he/she will have a Username. Post that name.
Of course, they can add a 2nd account, but low post count is a fairly good indicator of someone you might want t look into before sending them money.

Having this post in the General forum is a good thing, but please do not make additional posts in the classified ads about this. Keep it here.

when selling [or donating] an item i advertise here, [or elsewhere for that matter] i try to be as up front as possible, and at times, point out the worst of the item in question.
i believe all of the deals have had positive results, as i have had no negative responses from the recipients.
i have tried to be that way my whole rotten life, and it seems to be worthwhile.
your mileage will vary.

Also beware of Floyd Whitney from Texas ( supposedly probably overseas ) him and his partner in crime that answered my parts wanted ad scammed me out of $700 on a small block stroker crank a few years ago.. Still upsets me to this day ! I honestly don't know how these people live with themselves ? How do they sleep at night knowing they scammed a semi retired guy in his late 60s at the time out of $700 ? I guess at the end of the day he got $700 and I no longer have it ! I will admit there were red flags I should have seen but didn't.

I got an email from loveislove2113x@gmail.com replying to my wanted ad for a set of wheels here.

They were asking wayyyy too cheap of a price for them and the only pic they sent me of the wheels was a stock photo they got off google.

Humble opinon as a nobody:
"On this board" seems to be the part open to question.

The parts for sale board is viewable by the public.
It's not a requirement to have a username or identity here at all to view parts, and to respond by email/voice/text when that info is posted.

So, if a scammer responds to a public posted email or phone number in an ad, technically are they "on this board"?

If someone reads it and uses it, who doesn't belong to it, are they "on" it?

If you want to limit your customers to board members, then you have to limit communication to PM.

I've sold an awful lot of parts to people who did not belong to the board, but read the ad and contacted me through public posted email.
Many people with either money or with parts are not interested in all this kind of bantering back and forth stuff.

Somebody gets it.

That is why the contact info if shown should not be posted for all to view.

Interesting: I've only bought or sold stuff here from members, and didn't know that info was public.
The items I've bought or sold elsewhere were advertised elsewhere, leading to my simplistic understanding.

20+ years ago when I was first on this board selling parts, a buyer did something that I thought was a great idea. He sent his payment to me, a money order I believe, by certified mail requiring a signature. It was for some NOS parts that were $400 or so. Ever since that transaction I've done the same thing buying parts unless I was going to meet the seller in person.

Now that PayPal & other electronic methods are used I can't remember the last time & used or accepted a MO.
