Glad he never made the HOF. Glad it bothered him too. Yeah, but Fanduel is legal everywhere now. Betting - what does it even matter anymore? Nobody cares. Rose had over 1,000 more hits in his career than anybody EVER in the MLB. Second place is a million miles away. His record will probably never be broken. He should be in the HOF without a doubt.

I’ve got the new book out this year on him. One of the bookies taped a meeting with Pete where he was demanding his past due money and pointed out Pete bet on the Reds in 1977. Baseball is unique in having sportsmanship as one of the criteria for induction. Pete missed that mark by miles and miles and miles.
I saw where Dan Patrick said more bad things will come out on Pete after he dies. Guess we’ll see. He placed bets with the same bookies, so he might know something.

Pete isn't here to defend himself... This thread shows how controversial he was in the baseball world. And to be honest, I find it respectable that MLB didn't bend their rules for anyone....not even Pete Rose. But aside from all that, there's no dispute of how good (great) he was as a player. RIP Pete!

I personally think he should be in the HOF, but thats just my opinion. There are however several people within 1000 hits of him on the list behind him. Ty Cobb who is second on the list and less than 100 hits behind Rose had a reputation for being pretty nasty both on and off the field, and he is still in the HOF.

He used a corked bat. They cut a game used bat open and found it. Equipment guy admitted making them for him. HOF shouldn’t have guys like that in it.

I also believe he should be in the HOF. Truly an injustice in my opinion. Had he bet against his team I'd feel different, but he bet to win. His stats are awesome and he really earned the name Charlie Hustle. ALWAYS played hard and to win.
Ty Cobb was a nasty guy from what I have read, and a racist but it was a much different time so I believe he belongs there for the numbers he achieved in baseball. LIFETIME batting average of .367 will never be matched again.
Facts are stubborn things.

Because he's an all-around a$$hole and he ruined Ray Fosse's career for no reason in a meaningless all-star game.

Here's my take on Pete. Everytime he opened his mouth, he put both feet in it. For what he accomplished as a player, yes he belongs in the HOF. But his gambling on baseball, and his own team, as a manager is a cardinal sin in sports. See the 1919 Black Sox for reference. Baseball had ironclad proof that he bet on baseball and the Reds in particular. If he would have admitted it right away and showed some genuine contrition, there's a good chance that he would have eventually been reinstated and eligible for election by the veterans committee. But NO, Pete chose to deny betting for 25 years, all the while crying poor, poor me! Thumbing his nose at baseball every chance he got. He thought he was bigger than the game but baseball said no Pete, it's OUR game and OUR rules. So he lies and denies for 25 years then has the balls to say yes I bet on baseball, buy my book and read all about it. F... you Pete. You made your choices and paid the price.
