Not in crankcase... put it in the radiator instead. Used to buy it at drug stores back in the 60's, but probably not any more.

I remember some old time (1960-1970s) gas station, AKA "Service Station" mechanics using pepper in the radiators as a stop leak sealer work scope
I'm thinking around a tablespoon or so is what was recommended and used back then in regular size big cars with V8 shruggy

I’d figure up a way to pressurize the head. Fill the cooling passages with the aforementioned sodium silicate mixture and let it sit for awhile hoping the mixture permeated the crack. Empty and let dry. Last line of defense after that would be some Belzona 1111 epoxy.

Sodium Silicate doesn't work that way. It needs heat to set. Wiki says it has to reach over 200F to harden, then after it sets, it's good to 800F.

i have repaired a few heads with a trick I picked up from some older ss ford racers I know running 427 t-bolt.. you have to have the head off the motor to do it but it works.Bowling ball epoxy..you mix it up and pour it in the coolant passages and turn the crack down so as to let it run in behind the crack it sets up like hard plastic...

Interesting reading about this. I’m going to look in to this further.

As it turns out I got a reprieve - customer has another head. So we have time to fix the defective unit. K heads are not easy to find these days.

The car manufacturers mostly use vacuum impregnation.

Alot of brand new vehicles are built with parts that had porosity problems but were otherwise ok, and were repaired by a vendor before being bolted on.

Especially common on cylinder heads and transmission cases.

Somewhere out there, there is probably someone who would take on small jobs for a hobbiest and I'd like to find that person/company.

When we had to source new piston retainers for the Reman program we had them impregnated 100%. Yes, would be nice to find a shop that would deal with small time buyers.
