I thought he agreed to a lifetime ban? I am not super knowledgeable about baseball’s HOF rules…I hope he gets in. The all time hits leader should be in the hall of fame even if they were of questionable character.

Bingo, we have a winner! How did the permanently ineligible ban work out for Shoeless Joe?

Pete Rose doesn't need a bust in Cooperstown for us to respect his accomplishments on the field.

iagree In spite of my fierce opposition to his election to the HOF, I have the utmost respect for what he accomplished on the diamond.

The gambling rule he broke results in being declared "permanently ineligible" to participate in anything related to MLB. That's the rule. The BBHOF follows the same rule. What he said, agreed to, etc. is not relevant as it relates to the HOF.

The NBA just kicked a player out and banned him for betting on games too. It's happened to other athletes as well. Rose gets all of the attention on the topic though because of who he was as a player, and probably as a person too.

Pete Rose was a childhood hero of mine. I don't really care about the HOF, but I guess he did.
I admired the way he played the game and always gave it his all, including running out walks.
While the Ray Fosse event was sad, it was well within the rules at the time. Ray was in the way of Pete trying to score.
Ray Fosse wasn't a target, Pete was just playing the way he always has, to win. The players today, in all sports, don't give it their all, they just collect the money.
RIP

True, very true, but the rule he broke is specifically mentioned as resulting in being permanently ineligible. That's on him. He didn't do it accidentally.

Personally, I really don't care that he gambled, even on baseball. He never bet against himself/his team. But the rule is clear-cut, regardless of whether it's a good rule or not.

I think the far bigger hypocrisy from MLB and the Baseball Writers of America (the most insufferable group of flabby beta "men" imaginable) is making pariahs out of the players from the steroid era. The 1994 strike nearly killed MLB. The steroid era saved it. And unlike gambling, there was no specifically defined rule about steroids and the consequences of using them.

I agree 100% The league and writers knew perfectly well what was going on but after the strike they were only too happy to get ratings up and excitement surrounding the game. Some of the greats of the era have been written out of the books too, like Rafael Palmiero and Juan Gonzales.

It was the 12th inning to win or lose the game. Both players wanted to win...
you sound bitter because you lost, athletes play to win...sorry for your loss

I suppose you also hated that John Scott got the MVP of the NHL All Star Game?

I don’t think how pete did his family was anything to be remembered by. It’s as messy as lying for decades about gambling that absolutely could and likely did affect games.
