There is an Engine Masters video that covers this. It's pretty entertaining. https://www.facebook.com/amsoilcana...ut-engine-masters-ep-27/153247265330893/

Flat base I think beats out a dropped base if you have the hood clearance to pull it off. Also from a different YouTube video I saw a dyno guy said you need 2-1/2 to 3 inches of clear air space above the carburetor opening otherwise it becomes a restriction.

Flat base worth 5 hp on this engine. https://youtu.be/VfxHquzaVCg?si=wWRv_kmyyVc1VzZa

My old 1963 Plymouth Max wedge 415 HP stocker would run .002 to .004 quicker in the 1/4 mile with a both flat top air cleaner bases on it versus no base and with the air cleaners on it, that was with the stock hood with no scoop shruggy

Just a little info .. not really base related but when I ran my 410 inch small block on the dyno we ran it with out an air cleaner at all then with my air pan and 5 inch tall K&N filter and there was no difference in H.P. or torque. It was good to know that my air cleaner wasn't hurting performance. I run the set up with a six pack hood on my Dart even though the dyno didn't show it I am sure the fresh air / scoop helps the performance. My next test is going to be one of the K&N filter lids ( I picked up the whole air cleaner assembly with the filter lid for $30 at Carlisle ) . When it gets cooler I am going to make runs with the filter top on and one with just a regular lid and see if there is a difference. I have read that the filter tops don't work but they are closer to the carb than mine , my set up has it 5 inches up from the carb with the scoop it seems like in theory it would help with more air coming in to the carb. My air filter just lays flat on the base of my Moroso air pan I wonder if putting an air cleaner base under the filter rather than have the filter rest on the air pan would do anything .. looks like something else to try at a test and ruin day.

I think, CRS disease realcrazy I did some engine dyno testing with 14x4 inch tall K&N air cleaner with a steel top and diameter with their filter top, I also tested both at the local drag strip, LACR, several weeks later.
The motor loss a little HP on the dyno with the filter lid but went faster and quicker with it on at the track shruggy work
Testing both ways on the engine dyno and then at the track was eye opening for me, test, test and then test some more up grin wrench scope twocents
