Looking for any advice on a 4 post lift I am wanting to buy. By building has 12 foot high ceilings and space is not really limited but is at a premimum , and would like like to stick to a 110v unit. This would be for mainly extra storage and the occasional oil change . Thanks

Advantage Hoist/Wildfire. I think the same hoist is marketed under multiple names. VERY well built, very solid and if you get a caster kit, very easy to move around (without a car on it of course.....don't try that, it wrecks the wheel kit)

Seems a two-post lift is much more efficient space wise vs a 4 post, IMO.

Here is mine, it's a BendPak HD9, I am very happy with it. I looked at the others mentioned, most are made by the same manufacturer and then rebranded. I had to get the one I did because of spacing and needing a wider track for the Challenger.
Shop around, if you decide on the other models listed above, you will find pricing all over the board for the same exact model.

For me it will be mostly for additonal vehicle storage .

one of my dumbest "life moves" was not making the roof of my garage high enough for a lift when it was re-constructed way back around 1996 or so..........
sure could use one now, since my old body is just about wore out !

HA , Im close to admitting that same thing... built a shop with 9'6" ceilings so no full lift 'cause "Ill never need one"...how things change.

They are all identical or very similar except for the name.
I like the ones that can be wheeled around. With my layout one in a permanent spot is in the way of moving cars around.

To me, Mohawk is top of the line, still Made in USA and all that....and they are what I'd default to if cost was no object.....

....but they don't sell 4 post for smaller automotive apps.

IMO storing a car on a 2 post lift for long periods of time , especially an old unibody that doesn't have added bracing, isn't the smart thing to do.

That said a few years ago I got lucky and found a guy on craigslist selling a Challenger 9k wide 4 post lift that was barely even scratched for $1800 bucks , ~6k msrp ... Made in USA and certified by what ever entity it is that certifies them. I have about an 11ft ceiling in the garage , just enough to get my Bee on top with the Dart under it . I'm removing the ceiling joists above the lift, put a high lift kit on my garage door so it clears the on top while it's up, and might have to put a small dormer on the roof so I can stand up under it with my truck on it .

Me too. But I remedied that in 2021 with my new 14' ceiling shop. Couldn't be happier with my 2 post BendPak.............

Don't fret, the two car lift guys will soon be crying about not having enough height for the new 3 car lift set-ups

Yes I would Agree Rich. As a matter of fact I use to own a Mohawk and they are built to pick up Sherman Tanks . Unfortunately that was a different time and I have different needs now.

That's basically what I'm doing first , I can go up 1/3 the gable height and run collar ties from one side to the other ... but the length of the lift which is roughly 20 feet , if I need for head height then I'll look into a dormer.

The one thing to pay attention to is the relationship of the door height to the car on a lift, I put in hi lift tracks, which raises the door an inch from the underside of the ceiling joist and switch from extension springs to a torsion spring setup that is above the door, that needs a small pocket in the ceiling for when I decide to drywall it. Also took out the opener and will run a jackshaft opener. the width of the lift is wider than my door opening so driving in is as easy as it was without the lift.

the "pocket" part modifications to the roof trusses/rafters wouldn't be too terribly difficult to accomplish, as they are made from rough cut 2x8's.
however, during the reconstruction, [the garage was built by the guy i ASSumed the mortgage from way back in 1983 when interest rates were in the mid 20% range, and by doing this, his interest rate was "only" 13 1/4%, and this guy was a real HACK when it came to home construction. ] i wanted a clear interior span without any posts, of which there were three, so i constructed a steel truss that goes from side to side identical to the one outside, shown supporting the 9ft overhang.
i'm not sure how i could modify the inside truss to accommodate the height needed for the lift and still maintain it's structural integrity. i have sketched out several design elements of a modification, but none i could come up with that may work, seemed would be structurally sound.

Forget the roof, that beast has style beyond words BTW
