Likely still a wiser option in the long run than the new trucks.
Several years ago in the Spokane are, the pre-computer Cummins Dodges about doubled in price. The BR series in general had a few issues, but were largely bulletproof.
Its just not the cummins trucks. A dealer gave me far more then I paid new for my 96 F-250 4x4 powerstroke manual trans truck. Although with 38k miles and well taken care of it was as nice as one would find.
Just goes back to the rigs that your average guy can wrench on themselves, find parts for and not paying 70-100k for something that needs a dealership for even the most basic of things. So many of the newer trucks have a long way to go to pass the longevity test.

Cummins Dodges have a cult following , 2 years ago I paid 10k for a 2wd quad cab 6.5 bed with 172K basically sight unseen that was for sale at a Ford dealership in Arkansas .. trade in ... cost me 2k to ship it to NH. I had to put tires on it and replace the lower control arms to get it to pass NH inspection. I could have sold it for 15k off the trailer , few scratches , no rust. I really wanted a 4x4 but I'm happy with i.
It's the LAST truck I'll buy at 61 yrs old, It's got 215k now. It's my daily, 64 miles round trip and gets a solid 20mpg, it's stock.
I still have the 2000 2500 4x4 I bought new, stripping for parts, and I bought one 5 years ago with 328K on it out of Alabama that I traded in to a new car dealer that gave me $2500 for it .

My 2000 Cummins , has 58,000 on it ( not a mis-type )58k
I have had some good offers for it but, can't replace it so I'll keep it for now ..all I use it for is to pull enclosed trailer
That's a beautiful truck , the one I bought has the holes in the bed for a 5th wheel hitch and the prior owner had a site construction company , judging by the dirt that was caked up in side the bed around the rear tail lights all it did was drag around a trailer to construction sites .

This! I have 3 friends w/ 2016 and newer Duramax trucks that all want my higher mileage 2006 Duramax. No thanks. The cummins is easier to work on too. I loved my '01 Cummins, but needed a crew cab that actually has room in it and didn't cost a fortune...so I got the GMC.

Also the 13 and newer trucks, all manufactures I think, are using DEF. Many issues with the DEF and other emissions systems. One of the reasons the earlier ones command more money. Way less issues. BTW, anyone want an 04.5 HO 6spd 2X dually? Selling mine. Only took me 20 years to realize I don't really need it. Picked up a 67 Coronet wagon to replace it.

]I think it's 09/10 for Dodges going to Def , I'll never own a newer than that Diesel.
That truck should sell pretty fast , quad cab or regular , miles? That would be a perfect truck for Rhinodart , he wouldn't have to worry about blowing up the trans .

That's the main reason I bought a 98, I was tempted to get a 12v for even less computer control but I wanted the suicide door quab cab and finding one with a 12v in my price range was not happening. Plus I have lots of experience with the VP44 trucks, I have a spare engine, trans and rear axle , this is the last truck I plan on owning and I can fix it myself.

Not sure about other areas, but around here a 2wd diesel is hard to sell. A dually is even harder to sell. If it's not a crew/quad cab...harder again. Long bed...might as well keep it for a work truck.

How I found these I was casually looking around for a BR/ BE series quad cab, 2wd shortbed diesel. IF I could make something like a sell one buy the other with no money out of pocket, or at least close to it Something that would be better suited to pull an enclosed trailer than my 2012 hemi truck. Having recently retired I no longer need it for a dailly driver. I can pick up a cheap econo box for that chore if needed
But I sure aint adding 8-10k OR MORE to make it happen. I'll keep my truck first
A friend of mine back east has a 2004 2500 he bought new, Cummins, quad cab 1ton dually long bed 2wd. It might have 40k miles on it by now,,,but I doubt it. He gets offers all the time to sell it ,,,,,and has turned down more than he paid for the truck new
Seen this video on YouTube and thought of this thread. Has hail damage, but no serious issues, typical mileage? At time of video truck was still below $3K.

Wonder what it hammered. A lot of the visible damage on that truck, put a better hood on it fixes that.
There are still many great deals around on the older cummins. Some pop up around here from time to time. One just needs to keep a stack of cash on hand and the nose to the ground and beat the flippers and dealers to the original source.
about 2 maybe 3 years ago. There was a low miles ( under 150k I think ) 2500 2wd about 20 minutes from me . Truck sat and sat unsold for weeks at low teens I think. Best I remember it was maybe a 2000 or 2001
I’ve been trying to buy a pre-def Cummins for about a year…watch the prices on Bring a trailer .com, holy smokes, I’ve been outbid on 6 so far, I set my limit and then proceed to get blown out of the water in the last hour of the auction…maybe I’m crazy trying to get a reasonably priced Dually on that site. There is a few at a used diesel dealership in Houston, might take a trip down there and eyeball some of them.
