Looks like he really got roughed up from that stuff, hopefully he continues to recover more

As mentioned elsewhere why is BJ auction not doing anything for him?

Probably because he’s not a registered charity and therefore not a tax deduction for BJ?

i always liked Steve a lot.
i kind of know how much of a beating he took with his illness, just because i have health issues to deal with as well.
he does look a little better than the last time i saw anything of him, and i really pray he can kick back to his former self.
however, it does look like it will be quite a while.
here's rooting for ya buddy ! as Red Green always says : "We're all in this together......." up

He's an equally likable guy in person; very unassuming.
Hoping for a full recovery, of course - he's certainly deserving of that.
I don't know whether B-J is helping behind the scenes, but if Craig Jackson & etc did a charitable auction for him, I'd be glad to see it.
I would think the rehab for something that serious would be expensive.

Be nice to see Foose or someone build a car for charity and to auction it off at BJ. Deep pockets there and could go a long way to help a deserving car guy that has been great for the hobby.

shame he has to sell the house, multiple cars and some collections just to pay medical bills.

Encephalitis is not a joke so hope he recovers completely.

I watch his Junkyard Gold shows when I run across them. Guy has a wide knowledge of car history that is for sure.

Hard to belive that he isn’t on Social Security disability. If not should of applied as soon as he got the diagnosis.

I agree. I wish Barrett-Jackson would have stepped up and run that through the auction for him
. Sounds like he's selling everything. His last video even had his Mopar for sale. He mentioned he's selling his house, his truck and it sounds like everything. He even stated he's living with his stepmother and he may have nerve damage to his hands. Prayers are being sent his way. Barrett-Jackson auction on his Ford would probably bring big dollars

And I still wonder if he contracted it from mosquito in a junk yard. I'm so glad he's recovering!

It typically takes 18 months to 2 years to get approved. They back pay to the time that the application was made, but it will usually take nearly 2 years before the applicant realizes anything.

I haven't heard anything about his Hemi Dart in a long time. I know he's selling some neat projects.

It appears a legit GoFundMe has been set up. I got the link off his YouTube channel.

Appears he's up to $68K already.

Mods maybe make this a sticky for a bit.

WOW! GoFundMe doesn't charge for their service, but suggest an 18% tip. shock Thank Goodness they don't deduct any from the actual donation.

Did anyone tip them 18%?

He has friends from every aspect of the automotive world including me. I've struggled over the last 25 years and 16 surgeries so I know a lot about it. Happy to help him and his family no matter where this goes. God bless.

He should have basic healthcare (Obamacare) through his state. That should help put dents in those hospital bills. Hopefully he has family advocating for him.

He used to have articles in Hot Rod Magazine all the time (and I'm sure others too, but I remember Hot Rod the most).

Now if someone says "what is Hot Rod Magazine" I give up.

*sigh*

Ok, I don’t watch either ‘show’ or read Mototrend so I guess that explains that

He's done a little more than that. If you are an Mopar guy and have not heard of Steve you have been under a rock for the last 25 years.

A devoted student of the Detroit performance scene and the history of hot rodding, Steve got his "big break" in 1997 when hired by Hot Rod Magazine as Technical Editor. Steve worked on-staff in the Petersen Building on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles from Tuesday, August 19, 1997 until Tuesday, January 20, 2004. He contributed to a total of 77 issues of Hot Rod (December 1997 through April 2004) and was a driving force in helping to re-emphasize the roots of hot rodding, nostalgia drag racing and focusing on inexpensive junkyard-sourced hot rod projects.

After leaving Hot Rod Magazine, Steve continued to contribute technical, historical and personality profile articles to Hot Rod, Car Craft, Mopar Muscle, High Performance Pontiac, Chevy High Performance, Elapsed Times and Hot Rod Deluxe magazines.

He also authored three books for CarTech Books starting in 2010, the first being "How To Build Altered Wheelbase Cars", followed by "Rusted Muscle: A Collection of Derelict Dream Machines" and finally "Steve Magnante's 1001 Muscle Car Facts".

Steve is also part of the live on-stage TV crew during the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction events on Fox Sports (formerly Speed TV) since 2005. In addition, Steve is a spokesperson for Dodge and the Dodge Scat Pack, helping to spread news of the latest hemi powered machines available from Dodge. Though Steve's "core" is Chrysler related, he is also a fan of vintage and late model Ford, GM vehicles as well as the many special vehicles produced by AMC, Studebaker, Packard and the rest of America's many auto makers.

Steve lives in North Brookfield, Massachusetts where he works on his fleet of three altered wheelbase cars when he isn't traveling on the road for Barrett-Jackson or Dodge.

Been active in Mopars for 60 years and like I said no interest in that stuff. Now if Hoover, Sox, Landy, those guys I’ll know about. Sorry he has troubles but he’s no Mopar ‘god’ in my book. Have a nice day

What an idiotic response, I didn’t know who the Hell he was so I asked, one said I was under a rock all my life, so I responded back with no Denigrate. BUT you had to speak up too. Telling it like it is so you go take a flying jump at the proverbial donut and worship your ‘journalist’

That's because the crypt keeper in question bears a strong resemblance to a feminine hygiene product.

Got a thank you note from Magnante. To be honest, with the volume of donors, I really did not expect, or really need, one. But it was nice.

Never met the guy, not really a fan or anything, but losing your life's work because of a medical bill is just wrong. Yeah, it happens a lot, but in this case I could help. So I did.

Meanwhile in the crypt no one cares, lol. Karma, bubba, will bite you and I'm the kind of guy that will gleefully point it out and laugh at you when it does. popcorn

Why would they lock this? No extremism here but just a couple different opinions.

I kicked the guy $50 and to be honest im not a huge fan or follower of the guy. Running around the woods looking at junkers with a mag in the other hand is not my thing and I never made the connection to BJ till maybe a year ago. BUT he is a car guy. Has his own rides and contributes in his own way that others like and follow.

I will say he has always appeared to be a decent guy and not the "look at me" type. And not unlike many hes had some unfortunate medical problems and I think we can all agree our medical system has a lot to be desired.

For some reason many have stepped up and that does say a lot. Remember when the younger guy crashed his A body and started a gfm to replace his race car and all the other frivolous causes people have raised money for?

So in this case the car community as a whole is helping out a guy who seems very deserving of the help. No one forced the donations. I mean look at the medical path hes been down as its no joke and hes lucky to be talking and moving and its far from over. So maybe the $50 here or $100 there can give the guy a little bit of hope in his world thats been total crap for some time.

Isnt this what were supposed to do when we can? Help out deserving guys with a common interest?

Man....you guys can find something to fight about in any topic.

And people wonder why traffic is down so much at this place.....shruggy

I like Steve Magnante. An unassuming guy without the obvious ego of so many other TV hosts. He has tons of knowledge that he has a knack for sharing in an easily understandable way. I liked Junkyard Gold, and enjoyed reading him in the pages of Hot Rod all those years ago. Barret-Jackson is outta my pay-grade, so I didn't even know he was on that.

What makes me shake my head is that in the wealthiest democracy on the planet, a productive member of society still stands to lose everything in the event of serious illness...but I'll stop there because I know there are those who would send this thread down a political rabbit hole & spoil it further.

Goodluck Mr.Magnante

Super knowledgeable guy without any ego or bs. I've always loved listening to him on BJ (he was the only one) and junkyard gold was great too.

I think he started out as a machinist for Stage 5. I know he had those heads on his Dart. His Dart was in a Mopar Action Tech Edition back in the late 90's. It was an original 273 HP car. I think. He's been around, an asset to the community for a long time.

I made the comment because I had a friend a decade back pass away from fungi encephalitis, which they discovered way too late, as the treatment is much different from bacterial or viral.

I did meet Steve once...at the Mopar display setup at the Woodward Cruise.
That was probably close to 20 years ago. Super nice down to earth guy. Just a regular car person is how
he strikes me. No ego whatsoever. I wish him well 🙏

He's talking about a brand X car, but it's good to see him 'working' again.

Older video, there’s a newer one featuring the new owner..

steve looks pretty good, considering what he went through. [that was the first i saw that video] really glad he is on the way to a good recovery.
as a former junkyard owner, [1972-1984/85] it's really odd, looking back now, that i didn't contract anything.
i never used any repellent of any kind, and the only "safety" measure my partner and i used semi-religiously, was bee spray, just so we didn't get stung. as most know, bees just LOVE to set up housekeeping in cars that sit still for any length of time.
thanks for posting that video about steve. up

A junkyard i used to visit years age had tons of them. It was in the middle of the woods and had bees nest's in a lot of the cars. If you stood still and just looked around you could see them making trips back and forth. Had to see where they are before opening a hood and get big surprise! shock It will test your skills running in a junk yard.

Nothing as exciting as opening a hood and and hearing the buzzing kick in then getting chased thru 6 foot tall grass and thistles while tripping over invisible rusty bumpers and exhausts then they always manage to corral you between two vans parked in a V shape where you cant get out between them without dashing back thru the swarm toward the hive! Then when you reach safety and settle down, suck on a bee sting or two then you realize you got to head back into those weeds to figure out where all your sockets fell out of your tool box you were carrying. When you get back in there you see the same car and have to fight the urge to look in there again.
