This thread has helped me numerous times in the past couple years...

Sorry to bring up an old post but now I need some clearification and figured I might as well add it to this thread.

OK this is a 1971 non HP 440 I just picked up. The chrome valve covers came with the non HP 1968 440 I also bought (pictured in the following post).

The VC on the passenger side is what I believe to be a 1968-69 HP style cover.

The VC on the driver side is what I believe to be a 1968-69 non HP style cover.
From what I understand I can easily turn this one into a 1968-69 HP cover by removing the 'tabs'.

Is this correct?

This is a 1968 non HP 440 I bought a couple months ago. Installed are the original valve covers for the engine. The engine was removed from a wagon and these covers originally looked just like the turqouise ones pictured a few posts above so I am guessing it was a C-body?
I removed the brackets and it has the flexible wire holders, however it never had any tabs. It now looks like a 1968-69 HP cover but does not have the correct tabs to be a 1968-69 HP cover.

I already removed the tabs off of this cover to make it a 1968-69 HP cover.

This is a 1977/78 400 I bought about a year ago. My father has a 1970 F440HP2 six pack engine he bought that was missing the original valve covers as it came with M/T aluminum ones. I wanted a set of aluminum covers for my 400 engine so I bought him the correct ones for his six pack engine as he was going to need them anyways. These were bought from a reputable source and are supposedly 1970 only HP covers. The thing that makes me nervous is the indent on the cover. They each have a different dent in them on the end from the 1968-69 covers. It is more squared off (like 90*). You can barely see it just below the massive distributor on the front of the cover. Was this for A/C cars or for 1971+ cars?
Are these the 1970 only HP covers?

No you are not correct , the right side cover is 69 ONLY if it's a factory installed cover , 68 has a bracket welded on for heater hose retention , the left cover is 68-69 used in HP applications ONLY if it were a factory installed cover .

The drivers side cover is definitely a 1970 383/440 HP cover, except for C body HP applications.

The right side cover is a 1971 HP and non HP cover .

Shoot!
I was afraid of that...
So what makes it a C-body cover?
What does a 1970 B-body/E-body HP valve cover look like?

The tabs for the spark plug wire , but I can't think of a C body model that would have chrome covers in 1969 ? I still think those are over the counter generic 1969 covers .

The 1970 cover for the pass side has an indent on the end under the dist SIMILAR to the 68-69 cover , look on the first page , there are examples of it .

I do not doubt these are over the counter pieces, but they are definately Mopar (Hustle Stuff/Direct Connection) parts. They are identical to my painted ones in construction and if they were painted, nobody could tell the difference. They are baffled the same and everything.
Personally I was just going to paint them...

When I said over the counter I meant over the dealer parts counter , not aftermarket .
