They never had their engines, they had 440's from the get go. Changes happened on the assembly line before completion...

I will let my H code 4 speed 1969 GTS go with all the restoration parts include, not cheap tsk

In fact the M-Code Cuda and Dart GTS was a "package" named the "A13" package where they took a base Dart GTS 383 and added and deleted base standard items like deleting the 383 engine and adding the M 440 engine, left/driver's side engine mount, etc., as said "Reminiscent of the A12"s."
