I'm having a disagreement online. My memory is I believe David Pearson in a Ford/Mercury for one race in late 60's? reconfigured his exhaust to exit the rear center of the car. It made it difficult for other cars to draft him in the race due to overheating. David ran very well and was always in contention or won the race.
Nascar never allowed it again.
The disagreement is whether it was banned do to overheating or carbon monoxide, which I don't dismiss, but that is not what the competitors were complaining about at the time post race if I remember correctly.
Anybody remember anything about this topic, who what where, why?
Goggle is drawing a blank.

You're pretty much correct. The exhaust was set up so it would line up with the radiator opening and cause a following car to overheat quickly. That was a time when the last second sling shot was the way to win the race. Richard Petty was the other car involved in this controversy. Pearson was driving for the Wood Brothers.

I managed to find this image after searching a bit. Is this the car?

That's it, thanks, and that is Daytona?, a race I attended.
It looks like a Firecracker 400 race with the crew attire.

I knew Mopart's was the place of infinite knowledge. LOL

Really just lucked out with my search, so it really wasn't "infinite knowledge." grin

I DO think Daytona had the covered pit stalls like that, didn't it? Here's the note on the Getty Images site included with that image. It does say it's Daytona:

"David Pearson

1969 - DAYTONA BEACH, FL: David Pearson comes to the attention of his Holman & Moody Ford pit crew during a race at Daytona International Speedway. The dual exhaust pipes at the rear were soon outlawed due to the heat and fumes they caused drafting drivers. Side pipe outlets became the standard. Thanks again, so that is the first I have heard about fumes as an issue and have yet to hear it in many decades in other racing forms with rear exhaust. never the less maybe my protagonist has a point.
Yes that track and pit covers looks lke Daytona, which you can also see the backside in this pic. Im the bigger kid, my friend later co owned/crew chief a Winston Cup team that won a doz races including the World 600.
Should have stayed in touch with him I guess LOL,

Yeah, sounds like your friend would have made an interesting person to know!

And yeah, it's a Mustang, but that's a great looking race car you're leaning on. Love the wheel and tire combo seen in the photo!
