Has anybody else noticed in your area if the big stores do not have much of a variety of ATF on the shelves, and what they DO have is very expensive? I can't even find ATF+4 on the shelves in my area, and Type F is pretty hard to find in any useable quantity. It seems like the only thing the stores are carrying now is a sort of "catch-all" ATF that they claim will work for any transmission. It's even unclear to me if what is advertised as compatible with Dex/merc is the real thing. I have been to several Walmarts, Tractor Supply Stores, Rural Kings, and even a local NAPA. The selection is pretty bad, and the prices are horrid. Am I just out of touch?

I have a new converter and rebuilt / race prepped 727, and i want to put good fluid in it for the season. I have run ATF+4 in the past, but not sure what to do now.

NAPA has Valvoline ATF+4 for a little over $150 for five gallons.

I may have to go that route. Will have to see if my in-town Napa even stocks them.

I noticed Type F and "Older" Fluids (ATF+4 is one of them) getting scarce a few years before corona virus came into play.

Wally world and anyone with discount prices made more room for air fresheners and cleaners and less room for oils & service supplies. They pretty much stocked just the fast sales/newer car stuff and dropped everything else.

NAPA still has everything I needed in stock or later that day. Just a week ago I bought a quart of ATF+4 which was in stock at NAPA.

Rock Auto has it starting at $7.11/qt, plus tax and shipping.

Even have MoPar brand at $48.79 for 5 liters, which is a bit more than 5 quarts.

How much is the tractor fluid some have been using?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

At the beginning of spring last year, I paid $8 a quart for AFT +4 at a local parts store ($6 a qt at a local farm store but I needed it then). Last week I paid $8 a quart at our local farm store (over $10 at the parts store). I could have bought as much as I wanted at either place.

At this point in time, there is no single go to store to buy everything. Nor is there any single store to get the best price on any one item all the time. It really is a who has the best deal going on, day to day now.

Case in point, Mobil blended 10 W 30 in a 5qt jug at Rock Auto came out to just under $4 a quart including tax and shipping and was delivered to my door in 2 days. The best price anywhere locally is nearly $6 a quart (+tax), buying 5 quarts in any combination. Same deal with the Wix oil filter for my 3.9, with shipping, RA was over a buck less expensive for the same filter without tax or shipping. Next time it might be the other way around.

If your watching your cash flow, shopping around pays pretty well these days.

The ONLY thing I used to go to Walmart for was Mobil 1. Then I realized I could buy it for almost the same price delivered to my door from Amazon. Saves me a trip to that craphole! Might be worth a look?

Summit Racing has what I'm looking for for a decent price. Free shipping if my cart is over $100.
I will do that. I always tried to buy my oil and consumables locally, but it seems those days are coming to a close.

It's been probably a handful of years since I had to buy any ATF. I remember the last I bought was from Walmart brand Type F, I would buy whatever they had when I would go in there shopping. Took me a few trips to get enough for a service change. Lately walmart has been redoing their oil section and seems like they are carrying alot less. I was surpirsed they still had Type F, I forget the price I want to say $5 a qt. I didn't grab any as I have about 20 qts at home yet.

I ordered 3 gallons of ATF+4 from Summit racing. It is Valvoline brand, and the price was $31.99 per gallon. Free shipping if you get the cart over $100.

Is that the fluid the person that did the trans is recommending ? =4 is the last fluid I would run in a trans that doesn't have a lockup convertor that needs to slip when applying ... then again I didn't run it in my 2000 Cummins Ram which is what the factory wanted , but my trans builder did not.

running up my post count some more .

I have just always run ATF+3 and ATF+4 in all of my Mopars since the 90's. My trans builder (Mr. Cope) said to run any ATF.

I'm with John on this one.

Newer fluids have more friction modifiers to make the fluid more "slippery". They do this to prevent harsh engagement, especially for the lockup convertor.

In an older transmission or anything race I never run anything but old school style fluids Dexron or type F that don't have as much of the friction modifiers.

Unless the builder or parts inside require a specific fluid then I go by those specs.

He needs to be a little more specific in his fluid recommendation then .... I'm a Cope fan and use his parts and advice ... the only +4 fluid I use is the synthetic power steering fluid because it works in cold weather ...
