6,000 rpm launches, are you guys racing or having a burn out contest down the quarter mile track?

Tires. My 60's suffer a little, but I don't have to change a clutch system every year. It's my choice. Something has to slip, I choose tires. My 60's are around 1.60.

My clutch locks on the launch,... tires spin for about a car length. Still enough to lift the front tires off the ground and pull down 1.60 60' times.

So you can dump the clutch at 6k and not burn tire all the way down the track!

Can't do this on the street though!

Just thought about this thread again after starting the thread on tricks to help with transmission strength/ life

Definitely has to be more than what is posted...

No one is mentioning what gear set they are running? The 23 spline has a narrow, standard, wide and overdrive gears.

I have a 2.47-1 and a standard 2.66-1 and working on getting good parts together for a 3.09-1 box.

Does anyone know if the OD input shaft is the same as a standard 3.09-1? They are both 22 tooth...Tim

Astjp2: Thanks for posting that about the 3.09's

I did talk to one guy using the 3.09 and he said he had some issues hooking up (class rule, stock-type tires only).

Has anyone has ever tried going the wide-ratio 3.09, 1.67, 1.0 route?

Kind of like this car.

Here is my setup.
68 ply gtx
original 18 spline trans
354 rear gear
325/50-15 et radials
mcleod street twin clutch about 4 years old
90wt fluid in trans
stock bellhousing
hurst comp+ shifter [originaly inland shifter]
modified shift levers to shorten throw
launch at 3000 rpm anymore and spins the tires
not powershifting. I know it would do much better if I did.
best 60ft 1.81
average 60ft 1.9`s need more time at the track and some nice sticky bias ply et street tires.
best et 11.81 @ 119.26
suspension has front and rear sway bars, bilstein shocks, big torsion/strut rods and factory rear leaf springs.
weight with my 180lbs in the front seat 4,120lbs

And I agree there are not to many guys that will play with an old manual trans at the track

Here is a run a couple of years ago.

I cant see how anyone would want the 3.09 ratio gears.
Too much rpm drop when going to second gear.

I run stock 2.66 gearset.

My dad tried the old 3.09 set and broke two input shafts. Actually took the teeth off of one and twisted the splines on another one. We think that the metal is just not as good as the later setups. Either way, the 3.09 gears from the mid 60's A-body transmissions are not up to snuff, strength wise.

Thats interesting, the mopar performance chassis manual recommends the 3.09 for drag racing. Al Debevec told me about using the 3.09 gears over the 2.66 because high torque motors wanted the rpm change. Tim

You gave everything except the tire size. What size are the tires in your Avatar Puicture? Do they spin much at launch?
thanks

Tires in my avatar pic are for cosmetic purposes only. (P345/55R15) I blow them off at will on the street if I jump on it. At the track I use 29 12.50 X 15 Hooser slicks. Tires spin about 5 feet at launch.
As stated, I've tried the 3.09 gear set. It didn't work for me. My short times were the same as the 2.66 set. My ET's were also about the same. I twisted 2 3.09 input shafts and actually wiped out the cluster gear with the last twist...
My car being heavy, I thought the 3.09 set would work real well. In my case it didn't, so I'm sticking with the 2.66 low gear set.

I wonder if cryogenically treating the gears would help. Tim

The late coarse pitch overdrive input is the same as the old 3.09 input but the '75-7 overdrive input is different.

This is about the 1:1 3.09 A833 that has 3.09 first, 1.92 second, 1.40 third and 1:1 fourth. Not much different than the ratios you would find in a Jerico or G-force drag race transmission.

There is a bunch of great info in this post. I will share my combo even though I am trying to get it dialed in still. Mainly a street car but it sees the track a lot too.

70 cuda with a 493 not sure of the weight
23 spline transmission
80w90 gear oil
best pass launched at 3700 spinning the tires
m/t 275/60 drag radials
shifting at 6200 (not powershifting)
mcleod single disk 11.95
3.23 gears stock suspension ran 12.55 @ 111

Now have some homemade caltracs and stock springs put 3.91s in
We will see what happens my 60 ft is horrible. I am shooting for 12.20-.30s
