Swapped my 6 al to a digital 6 and now the car breaks up around 3500rpm popping thru the carb and exhaust

I check the timing after the box swap and was advanced to 45 so I brought it back down to the 34 I normally run.

only thing I did was swap boxes

everything was fine with the 6 al

it is powered and grounded at the battery

The pick up wires for the distributor is in the same spot with nothing around it

I had the same problem with 8975 retard with the 6 al removed that and put a dial style retard in and problem went away

I Wire remote starts and stereos for a living so it's not my 1st time around wiring

Any Ideas?

Did you cut the green loop wire and seal it? Check the dials to see if one is on at the rpm that its breaking up at? Check the coil.

I'm pretty sure the green loop is cut. But I'm gonna double check that after work

Car ran fine with the 6 al

I called MSD they told me to check the ohms on the plug wires.

only thing I changed was the box

The only other things I can think of are
low voltage on battery
timming gun ( adjustable?)Why was it at 45 degrees?
Is the retard being used?

Battery voltage is there.

13.5 running

The retard is not being used at the moment and the rev limit is set to 6800 and the 2 step is 0

the timing changed when changing boxes. Msd said that was common to see it 6-8 degrees difference in the boxes

I put it back to 34 when I checked the timming

Try switching the distributor pick up wires. I had this same problem going from a 7AL-3 to a Digital 7. When you switch from an analog box to a digital box the pick up wires need to be switched. After you switch the wires, reset the timing.

I had the same problem and never could figure it out and I tried everything. The two things to check first is electrical interference and low voltage, assuming all your wiring is correct. The Digi box does not like a lot of electrical accessories and I was running them all, fans, pumps, ect. The shielded wires did not seem to help me?

Ted has a good point,I ran my wires to the coil on the pass side of car and a shielded wire on the drivers side to the dist. to keep them away from each other.

Mine worked great in my 85 w/493, wrecked it.
Put the digi 6 in my 87 while it still had the /6 in it, worked great.
Put the 500 in the 87 and like you, I had a missfire above 3,500 rpm or so.
Checked everything, sheilded everything and rewired everything, no help.
Noticed that when it would mis that the tach was jumpy. hmmm
One day out for a cruise I forgot to turn on the elec fan, flipped the switch and the tach started jumpin. hmmm
turned off all of the electrics and bam, no missfire.
Went to a 136amp denso alt and all is good.

I have one that is more then the others

I replaced the pick up

moved the pick up wires away as far as I could

Made sure the green loop was cut

Swapped the pick up wires

No dice on any of them


Still breaking up

can't do that it's pretty much fixed

The pick up only goes in one way and you can't open the gap up any more

I had one the rev limiter was stuck @ around 4000rpm went back to my 6al and no more problems,
The digital 6 is junk IMO

how much work it be to swap back to the 6L just to make sure it is the box...... Have you been welding on or around the car lately?
DO any of your close buddies have a digital 6 you could swap with. maybe it is the box. I had a digital 6 come to be with a similar problem. had to send it back

Have you checked your voltage to your box (with everything else turned on too)?

I have had a digital 6 for several years now with zero problems. Electric fan, electric water pump, elec fuel pumps, the whole shabang...never a single problem....but I also have a 140 amp alt (80 amps at idle). Could it maybe be the digital is more sensitive to voltage drop than the old 6al?

I have personally battled it out with two different Digi 6's on two different cars and never won. Ended up going back to the good old 7AL2 and 6AL2 boxes with all of the add-ons. I'm not saying that some of the advise above couldn't clear up you problem but my experience has not been all that great.

That said I have a pal that swears by them and has been running one for a few trouble free years on the street.

No welding on the car at all.

Car was running fine!

Pulled the 6 al and swapped to the dig 6 thats when the problem arrived.

I called MSD and they gave me a few things to check they all checked out.

I'm yanking the dig 6 box and they sent me a pick up tag and I'm shipping it to them. I also have a 8975 retard box that is going back for them to look at for a 2nd time.

I'm putting the 6 al back in tonite

I had a similar problem with my Charger a while back. MSD sells a sheilded pick up cable. This might help. It didn't with mine. I swapped distributors and that seemed to work. I went from an MP mechanical distributor to an MSD distributor and that cured it.

When I took a closer look at the old distributor, a spacer was missing that caused the cam plate/rotor to move up and down. I got rid of the car before I could try it again.
