A buddy of mine just picked up his new 572 inch COPO Camaro. He took it to the track today and asked me to help with the tune. It was a really nice day to go racing, temp was 75 degrees and the air was pretty good. The car is running 9.80 off the trailer. It seems like the converter is way too tight for the car so that might be the first thing to change. It has a few new car bugs but not too bad. The fab work on the car is very, very nice.

Here is a short video of it pulling onto the track to make a pass. Very cool looking car and it sounds radical. NHRA factors them at something like 430 hp but I'd think it could make 600 hp once the tune is sorted out.

Sounds like he over revved it in 1st and 2nd gear work scope
When it quits pulling hard you need to shift them twocents

He ran 9.86 at 136 mph on that pass. He made a few passes when I was there and the best was 9.82 @ 137. I don't know what the car weighs but I think it is fairly heavy since it has a full interior and I think it is all steel with a glass hood. Driver is more than 200 so total weight on the line might be 3500? That is just a guess. Engine is probably making around 650 hp at the moment. GM says it makes 430 hp on the spec sheet.

Yeah he’s north of 730 easy. The carb’d crate 572 makes around 730, so EFI and tuning capability definitely trumps that. I have a friend with a 427 COPO and he’s 185#’s with car a little over 3400#’s in the beams and it moves out!

Maybe it's just me... but that air filter looks pretty small for an engine that size at that power level. Does it get run without it?

I think the 430 is a current NHRA factor, sure to be “ adjusted”

A 3500 pound car running 137 mph is definitely North of 700 horse

I talked to the owner today and he says the car is 3440 with him in the driver seat. So engine might be somewhere around 700 hp on the dyno. The weather was nice at the track but not dyno perfect air. Might have been down 5% from standard conditions. He is going to need 800 flywheel hp to hang with the best cars in this class so we're going to have to find 100 hp over the winter. The engine is coming out and going on the dyno once the season is over.

Here is another short video I shot with my cell phone. The quality isn't very good since I was standing on the wrong side of the track but it gives you a little bit of an idea of the car. Next time I'm at the track I'll shoot a walk around video so people can see more details of the car.

I keep thinking that NHRA should have a class that allows a 14x32 tire for the FS cars, and it could be the new Pro Stock.
At least there would be some variety in the class, and more like the early days; and less like semi-ProMod.

These are built for NHRA Stock Eliminator...they're not allowed anything larger than a 9" tire. It's been that way since the 70's.

The newer cars are cool to watch too, it's just part of the evolution of racing. The small tire guys can embarrass a lot of big tire guys even on marginal tracks.

Is this an GM, Chevy, production car or a special package for drag racing only like the 1968 Hurst Hemi Darts and Baracuda? confused
