Has anyone actually done these specific mods? Thanks!

I did back in late 80's/early 90s, they worked great.

Nice article. Help me be clear about a few things. In picture 5 the accumulator spring is discarded. Nothing replaces it?

If you're not going to use a blocker rod there is no reason to toss the spring, urban myth says the spring cushions the 1-2 shift but it simply isn't true.

In picture 10 I can't see exactly what ball is discarded? Is he talking about where the cup and spring are shown?

All of the 1/4" balls are located in canoe shaped tubs except one, it sits in a "D" shaped pocket...this is the one that can be left out.

Finally in picture 11 I assume the gauge is made because you want the spring to end up at exactly 1-9/32"?

A 6" steel rule can be used to set the spring retainer height, all of these mods are illustrated clearly in the TCI instruction page I posted earlier.

Nothing new here, the mods are as old as the 727. Unfortunately some of these home-spun mods actually work against each other in certain operating modes, you're much better off to invest in a quality reprogramming kit like the TF-2 where the mods compliment each other instead of vice versa.

the accumulator spring is removed and the accumulator is block with a 3 inch rod about 1/2 inch in diameter...

That's what you do but it makes for an obnoxious shift , a filing rattling shift is not necessarily a GOOD shift, I'd leave the spring in .

Trans is in car run on stands, here is what I ended up doing.

1) 5 clutches front drum, .055-.065 clearance

2) One hole drilled out to 3/16

3) One check ball chucked, didn't need to remove the other, already missing on '74

4) Left the accumulator spring in.

5) line pressure at 1" + 9/32"

6) Rear band, 4 turns from 72 inch pounds, front 1.75 turns.

I'll let you know how it shifts tomorrow after a road test, I'm beat. Runs fine on the stands.

I did a combo of these mods and the T2 kit.
Yes it shifts very hard if not on the gas.
I can put it in any gear at any speed.
Also mine won't shift until I shift it.

You don't want to shift BACK to first at any speed ...

Trans shifts firm but not rude, very pleased with the results.

Kickdown is prompt, light throttle shifts are quick and precise with WOT being a snappy, firm shift without beating the diff.
