Great link, on another page they seem to have the fine thread to 1/2 NPT adapter. http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessorieslist.aspx?pid=9
This is how I do ALL my motors. I pick mine up at HomeDepot or Lowes. Any hardware store has them. Pull the plug from the intake (or just drive the car there, you will need a regular hardware store for someone to come out and look at it) and bring the temp unit with you and they can fix you up.
You are gonna hafta expain this one. I'm pretty shure Homedepot or Lowes does NOT have automotive temp gauge adapters

I haven't quite figured out what the adapters that are shown on the page accomplish that the adapters that the ones that come with the gauge don't. The thing that also bothers me about those adapters working is that the OEM sender port n the manifold is way smaller than the fitting needed not larger where these adapters shown work. Put one of the adapters shown in the hole for the OEM sender and the probe for the mechanical gauge won't even fit in the hole it barely fits with no fitting in the hole. The adapters that I see on that page are for reducing the size. Where the OEM hole is way too small for the fitting. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif) I don't know where you guys are putting this sensing probe but it isn't in the OEM location short of drilling it out. It would very likely screw right into the heater hose port.
Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks.
But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

The adapters thread in they are open. Then the cap tube fits into it.The coolant still goes up to the tube.Ive used them on at least 4 SBs.Rocky

Yes, but first you have to have a port large enough to put the adapter in the first place, which is what I think he's saying.
that posted page of adaptors just gives you more sizes to play with. You still have to figure out how to drill out a port. I've never seen one smaller than 3/8 pipe thread

Most mechanical gauge have a big fitting.Thats where the reducers are used.I even have one in my BB aluminum pump.I did have to drill and tap it.Biggest problem with a SB is the manifold is too shallow for the tube. The reducer lifts it up and then it fits.Rocky

What I am saying is that the circled hole is the OEM temp sender port. It is not all that big. (circled) If you thread in a adapter the capillary tube will not fit into the hole in the center to go down into the flow of the coolant like it should be. Using adapters will raise the tube out of the manifold coolant flow and the only coolant around the tube will be up out of the flow and being out of the flow is also a good place for trapped air. The chance of trapped air and being out of the constant flow, the non coolant movement makes for a very good chance of inaccurate readings. I use the heater hole (with arrow pointing) outlet next to this hole and the tube fits down where it should - no problem.
