My Dell computer is still running windows 7. I was going to install my H&R Block CD today and purchase the software download, but I noticed that the "Minimum Operating System Required" says 8.1 or higher. I checked out TurboTax and it also requires a 8.1 or higher system. Has anyone tried to install 2019 tax software on a windows 7 computer?

I just upgraded to WIN 10 and it kept my Win 7 layout. Nothing new to get used to. When you install it it will ask you if you want to keep all your original files. If you say yes it will just make a nicer Win 7 start page and you end up right at home with it. I waited a long time to do it because I didn't like the way it worked on my wife's computer that came with it preinstalled.

Also if your computer is older and still using a hard drive you should upgrade to an SSD after upgrading to windows 10 to make it run faster. You can get them for $100 or less and all you have to do is mirror your hard drive to the new SSD, then you just swap them out. It's like going from a worn out slant 6 to a new hellcat, its the best thing you can do to an older computer.
Find out how big your hard drive is, 240gig, 512 etc. Buy a same size or larger SSD, then buy a USB to SATA cable to plug the new SSD into the USB port and follow this

I am running TurboTax on a Window 7 system. It gives you warnings but everything to work okay so far.
SSD drives were mentioned, I am a big fan especially on older slower computers. Just the decease in boot time is worth it.
I would never get anything else for any computer unless there was a need for huge storage.

Just finished TurboTax on my Windows 7 Pro computer and E-filed both Fed and state...no problems. Warnings that this would be the last year for Turbo Tax with W7.

First of all, you need to find out the information that since all the requirements for free space on the HDD specified by the developer are too low, we recommend taking into account the number of installed applications, games, collections of music, photos and movies, which also require additional gigabytes. Therefore, the optimal volume for these operating systems will be HDD from 250 GB, and preferably from 500 GB and above. If you are interested not only in the volume of the drive, it is worth considering a few more recommendations. And you can also recover lost data using DATA RECOVERY SERVICES.
Loading software is like heating your bath water on a woodstove !!
I don't know if Ufile exists for U.S. taxes but here in Canada I think its the absolute greatest. a) its online - no disks to load, etc. b) it safely stores previous years data c) in Canada, its able to link into the government database and pull up our T4 data which are the forms with all the pertinent financial data that employers submit and lastly d) it allows you to file online instantly with any refunds arriving within a week or two. So if, for example, there were no changes of address or marital status, you could conceivably do your taxes with about ten keystrokes and be done in under ten minutes!

Not saving my financial info regarding taxes to the cloud or any other location. It can stay native on my computer or in the IRS servers
There's a conspiracy theory in there somewhere !! Do you put your money in a bank or is it all in your mattress? Your data is actually probably safer in "the cloud" than in IRS servers !!

Hackers. If it's only at the IRS server, that's the ONLY other place it should be that is connected to the internet. No third party maintaining data somewhere. It's called basic security of information.
Are there plenty of places to hack info sure, why make it any easier in more locations than absolutely required. Isn't due to conspiracy theories at all.

Must be nice living in fantasy land with your head in the ground, if that's the hole it's actually in.
You can't go a day without someone hacking data from somewhere and personal info of the financial type is primo data to hack.

Pretty dense statement considering there was a 600 million dollar cloud hack just yesterday

Why the insults that others feel that the cloud isn't the location they want sensitive data stored? Same as I don't walk around with a shirt on that has my birth date, SSN, mom's maiden name, etc on it. The more locations that info is in the public domain, the greater the chance you have to become a victim. Even if someone says, info is secure, reality is, it is never secure outside your control.
I trust nobody with the safety of my personal information. Cr@p happens
Carry on.

A little off topic, but H&R Block is not good. I am a retired member of the military. My state recently enacted a new law making military retirement pensions non taxable. This is retroactive to January 2021. The software had not been updated to reflect the change in tax codes for NC. I went to an H&R block office and the "accountant" there argued with me. Refused me a refund. I know what I am talking about I told him, even delivered the proof from the NC Dept. of Revenues webpage. The idiot looked at it and said, "I don't know what this means"? H&R block headquarters never returned my e mail or phone call in regard to this. Now, my credit card company is hopefully disputing the charge for me. Turbo Tax worked great, that and NC's new tax exempt status saved this veteran $3,000 or so in income tax. H&R block is terrible.
