They were more concerned about hard shifting (complaints) during cold weather then long term durability (past any warranty times then).

My dad bought a brand new 73, 340 4spd duster, beat on it for 100k miles. Had atf in it new and it’s whole life. Never been apart and is the best 833 in our fleet. We still have it.....

It's very easy to tell which 833 I've rebuilt over the years had ATF and which didn't , the atf filled trans have a groove worn from the roller bearings on the cluster gear pin .

I never use atf in an 833

running up my post count some more .

Well how about ATF in the rear axle of a 8-3/4?
After all; it has gears very like an a-833.
Both are reduction type setups.

Uh-uh, hypoid gears differ because of the wiping action as the gears mesh; they need a special lube.

I have to agree, the best a833 I ever took apart was a 73 340 one owner 80,000 miles. I only put thrust washers, and needles kit in it in it, pin was unworn with atf, input and output bearings were tighter than the new ones in the kit, but it was always kept full. My own 40k mile hemi 4-speed with gear oil thick probably 140...bearings are good, mainshaft is the best I have ever seen, pin is worn .002 but no pitting, even the thrust washers could be reused. I have only been in 75-100 4-speed but the atf ones have been better, hemi 4-speeds a little worse, overdrive with atf are usually pretty bad. The countershaft on needles is just a bad design for overdrive, gl4 gear oil, a magnet and change it a lot for those. Just what I have seen. Maybe some pins are soft who knows but I have seen enough to not blame oil 100%.

Uh-uh: while not hypoid, same basic geometry on the a833 gears.
ATF serves as both a lubricant & hydraulic fluid, while gear oil doesn't.
Again: Chrysler changed NOT solely because functions the same, but rather by customer complaints.
