This isnt always the case. I have helped build a few electric conversion cars You can use cheap lead acid batteries and still get some range ( a older porsche 914), 8 lead acid batteries and a forklift electric motor, car can go almost 100 miles on a charge and the most expensive thing was the controller.

You can also buy battery blanks, where you add the top to them, (think AA style) then put the shrink wrap on them and join them together to make a larger battery, they allso do this for battery backup for your home. Lots of labor, soldering etc...

This is very quickly evolving industry / technology, and i am sure one day I will build one for myself, just not yet. I want to see some better battery tech come out. Really if you think about it, serius bnatteyr research has honestly only been going on for maybe 10 or 15 years, Think of an internal combustion engine (ICE) 15 years after devlopment... Not very impressive compared to todays ICE engines.

Taught at a tech school, helped with the electric vehicle classes. Prius is the oldest most plentiful hybrid car, lots of them on the road and in salvage yards. If I was to do an EV conversion I would go with Prius batteries. Mind you, that you have to follow the proper safety precautions, but all electric car batteries I know of can be disassembled and the individual cells tested. Heat is what kills the battery cells, and you will find the computer shuts the car down when only a couple cells fail. The majority of the cells are still good, most of the time it is the cells in the middle of the pack that get less cooling. You can purchase failed Prius batteries, disassemble, test, and build a good battery, on an all electric vehicle, maybe you would link three batteries. One of the projects we did at school was an electric scooter with a bad battery, we changed the controller and used some Prius cells, got it up to 64 volts, used it in the pits at the races for several years, all most fast enough to hurt you.

It's crazy how fast this is becoming a thing. Never gave any thought to EV until recently. Think about a few positives , No pun intended . But it will be a lot easier to build a drag strip around neighborhoods with less noise from engines. the loudest noise will be the burnout ?? Charge your batteries between rounds and wait ??

That would be a big NOPE

Besides, I like the noise.

Put the front guide on them and take them to a slot car track . Hell We can sit back drink a beer and use the controller to race, Sounds too much like fun to me. NOT !!!!

I think EV's are like a lot of things in life. They have their place.

Who gives a d i c k if they are fast......the silence and lack of rumble/noise and vibration makes them as boring as a date with a mannequin.

Absolutely. I accidently changed TV channels recently to a "Formula E" race (open-wheel electric cars). What a flat-out dud of an event and series.

Well errrrLee ... in your case might I suggest you hooking up a JC Whitney 6 volt record player ORE an 8 track machine then for your tunes requirements?

I meself... will put up with some TUNEless performance for a less than TWO SECOND 0-60 time !

Hi non EV’s and fellow sceptics.

I saw an electric Tesla MPV kick butt with a Hellcat.

So WHAT, I say.

Formula E is bearable but just full size scalextric to me... down

Gasoline cars are 100+ years old and most of our Mopars are 50+ years old. dino
Yep they is dinosaurs but still functioning as long as Gas is available.

I’m guessing the carbon footprint isn’t that bad if you only do 1/4 miles?

My worry is when the ‘EV’ crash or catch light you can’t put them out and folks get electrocuted etc.
But the pile of thrown away batteries is gonna be a nightmare to solve. fan

Once a gas car is dead it gets crushed and recycled, ‘end of’... hammer

Rimac Nevera 8.52 on street tyres, what will it do once they get the 4WD sorted?

Comparing Chalk and Cheese isn’t a fair comparison... drumhit

The first automobiles were electric so they are the older technology, and were soon shelved for all the reasons they still are few and far between.

I don't.

I'm a gearhead, not a friggin' electrician or nerd.

It's all about improving that big air pump under the hood that runs on high explosives, the slush box bolted to the back of it and the parts and pieces holding the wheels on.

Flipping a switch, turning a dial and not make any noise with all that money, is about as appealing to me as hot rodding my Milwaukee M12 drill.

I put EV's in the same category as Asian women. They are great, but I don't want one.
