Hi folks,
How good is the 1971 track-loc Dana in comparison to the power-loc?
I have one in my GTX and want to put around 600hp through it!
Will they take that OK or will I need to convert to a power-loc?
Thanks for any info, GtxxJon

Are you sure you don't already have the Power Lok? I thought that was the standard in car 60s.

hello ruderunner,
The track-loc actually looks like an open diff when you take the cover off! The friction discs are to the outsides, very odd set-up indeed.
Dr.Diff says cars under 400 HP! Surely they must be better than that???

Dr.Diff says cars under 400 HP! Surely they must be better than that??? That's what the good Doctor told me too. So with a 600 HP hemi I sold it and replaced it with an S-trac which he said was good to 1000 HP.

So the 1971 dana 60 is a weaker case as well, oh dear me... The 71 Dana case is not weaker. He means the carrier, Probably. I can see where it would be weaker. It’s an open design. Your problem is going to be axles. I’m pretty sure if you put in an older power lock in your 71 housing, they will need to be a different length. The 70 down power locks have a pin in them that holds the two cross shafts of the suregrip together. The axles touch those pins and that’s how the axle play is adjusted. The 71 track lock looks totally different. The power lock that is currently produced, does not have the provisions for that pin because the cross shafts are not drilled. You would have to use green bearings to solve that. DoctorDiff probably has a suregrip to fix all this and knows more than anyone about interchangeably on these so give him a email. He’ll call you back.

The 4 side gear type is more adjustable and re-buildable, case is very strong and it’ll hold that power plus you already have 35 spline axels (very strong too) so look for a 70 unit, 66-69 had the 23 spline axels but EVERYTHING depends on how sticky your tires are.

In my Challenger after mods to the motor in the summer of 1971 drove over the Dana. Challenger had very little miles on it maybe 400. From there it had a 1970 Dana in the car. In 1971 Chrysler for some reason decided to change a lot of things for the worst. Danas, Four Speeds were two of the Changes. I wonder if they saved any money doing this because I bet warranty took care of the cost savings if any.

Nice replies Guys! Its a shame that the earlier Dana's had 23 splines and others as well? I even have a Dana power-loc with 16 splines that I may be able to convert... Didn't think the Track-loc was gonna be THAT BAD!
