I came across someone selling a 3.08 gear set for a Dana 60. I didn't know that these were ever available. I had 4.10s in my Challenger.
I switched to 3.54s.
I don't know if I'll switch to the 3.08s but I bought the gear set anyway.
Question: Does anyone know what application the 3.08 ring and pinion was used in. I can't find anything on this anywhere.
Before anyone asks,
1) Yes this is for a Dana 60.
2) No it is not for a Dana 44
3) It is for a rear axle Not a front axle.
4) I think that the Date is 1967
I paid $40.00 plus $28.00 shipping.
I think that it was a good price but wasted money if I never use it.
I'm not sure if this ratio is too high but I had a 69 Charger with 3.23s and it was great.

3.08 got to be from a Dana 61. It will bolt to a 60 differential but you won't be able to set up properly in a 60 housing

Probably came out of a truck.

You will have to have the truck housing it came out of to make it work. These were used in the early cummins auto trucks without O/D.

You guys amaze me with your knowledge. It turns out that you guys are correct. It must have come out of a Dana 61. Years ago I do remember being at a junk yard looking at truck rear axles. I do remember seeing what at first looked exactly like a Dana 60 but the housing where the cover would bolt on was about two inches thick. That must have been a Dana 61.

Anyway after a lot of careful measuring I determined that the ring gear to pinion shaft center must be exactly 3/8" closer on the Dana 60 than on the Dana 61.

So, the conclusion is that 3.54s are still the highest ratio available for the Dana 60 and that the gearsets are not interchangeable between the Dana 60 & 61.

Anyone want to buy a ring and pinion for a Dana 61 cheap? Just kidding, its not the first time that I wasted money on my projects and probably wont be the last time either.

There was a 3.31 ratio in 1968.

3.33 in dana 60 in late 70's and some 80's ford truck axles. I had a set, and sold them on the bag about a year ago.

I don't know if they'd be worth the work. The .21 difference from the 3.54 can probably be made up in tire selection

Just thinking out loud here:
"after careful measuring I determined that the ring gear to pinion shaft center must be exactly 3/8" closer on the Dana 60 than on the Dana 61"
Why couldn't one machine 3/8 inch off the ring gear mounting surface on the carrier unit and use the 3.08?, if that is the ONLY difference.

Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160...

The ring gear flange is only about 1/2" thick.

I hate to respectfully disagree with the Dr
but I just had several ring gears in my hand yesterday.
The ring gear for the Dana 61 for the 3.08 is exactly .25" Thicker than the ring gear for the 3.54. Therefore the ring gear can be milled down .375" That will only be .125" thinner than the 3.54 gear.

The (carrier) ring gear flange is about 1/2" thick, not the ring gear.

Grinding the ring gear 3/8" wouldn't leave much thread engagement.

The best bet would be to remove half the material from the ring gear flange and half from the ring gear.
