LOL, yep! That thing wouldn't get a second glance at a lot of tracks around here as far as tech goes. It's better than some stuff I've seen run...pretty fast junk too.

The BEST scoop ever imo too! To heck with the fast cars all tucked in and can’t see then need 4 guys just to get you in the right place. Been there done that. I’ll be back to the slow car where you open the door to see if you’re in the water, shut door pull belts tight nail it, the good ole days. No one needed for help. Pump gas too! That is my kinda car right there

I bought an A12 that was hacked up like that by a Vanke's shop back in the day.

Everything and I mean everything on that kind of car is hacked and making something nice out of it is a bigger task than you might think.

Glad to read some of these later responses. My current car is basically old school look all over the outside, but very safety oriented in the rest of the construction. Hoping to create the spiffed up barn-find illusion as a tribute to those good ole earlier days. We went from class and trophy racing to bracket racing to try to perpetuate the sport and make it stay attractive- then along comes technology and throws a monkey wrench into that idea. Back to the bucks and higher skills again.Hobbies need participants to sustain. No electronics and index racing with half second interval steps does seem like it helps to level the playing field, MAYBE a little more focused on more basic human skills. Bill, yup, you guessed it, I'm an old guy!

I'm just amazed that the front end is still "straight" and not bent up to the sky. Removing the inner fenders takes all the structural integrity away and I don't see any front stringers from the roll bar/cage.

Funny how they cut the inner fenders out in the effort to save weight but the super heavy drum brakes are still there!

I was told that a lot of the Stock Eliminator guys rans drum brakes all round, as they had less drag?

The drum brakes are lighter than the factory disc brakes too. Aftermarket brakes are a different story.

I have been told the same thing. They also could be adjusted for zero drag as noted above.

the zero drag was the deciding factor with using drum brakes, but was somewhat scary stopping at the big end, depending on your top speed.
i tried that back in the early 70's, and i didn't like the stopping power vs the few hundredths gained, so i adjusted them back up. biggrin

I get the whole "zero drag" thing, but even back then there were lightweight aftermarket alternatives.

25 lbs. per corner on the front is a lot to give up!

The 9” drums on the front of the Duster are almost the same weight as the aftermarket disc. I know the disc stop better but at 120 on a 1/4 track its still easy to stop in plenty of time

GY3 the key word is 'aftermarket'. A gent back then would not consider paying for any upgrade that didn't include horsepower. Brakes? leave them and just hope it will stop after 1320 and backing them off to have less rolling resistance. This car is a time capsule. Is it unsafe in people's minds now?... yes absolutely. The people saying they see the same type of stuff today that runs at tracks shows 'it aint pretty, and it's probably unsafe but it's what I have and I will try and make a few hits' Would I want to run next to that car?...No! The thing for me is the nostalgia. It's cool and brings me back many years ago.

Yes, things happened differently at the dragstrip in the early 70's. Some scary things were raced by todays standards.I raced a 3200lb big block Nova, high 9's 140mph. It had 6cyl drum brakes w/metallic linings up front, with big Mopar drum brakes w/ organic linings in the rear. Thought it was the best of both worlds. Cheap, light and stopping was never a problem. No internet then to bounce around ideas and reviews of performance parts, just word of mouth and car magazines. Most stuff was put together with a large helping of used parts. You had to "TRY"stuff, money was spent trying to go fast. Most guys didn't have the money for the cylinder heads and work that it took for the horsepower of today. If it didn't make the car go faster ,it didn't get bought. If you wanted a real safe car, you borrowed Mom's. Hope that sheds some light for those not old enough to remember. The 9sec big block was all iron and all used parts except rings, bearings, gaskets, and a roller cam bought with an IRS refund. You can go fast on a budget, its just not as pretty. Bill

Love the stock 10" drum brakes too, I would send it! boogie

Hell , back quite a few years ago . I had a 66 Dart with a pretty warm 440 in it Dana out back with big drums and small 6cyl drum brakes on the front. Talk about and Eticket ride on the binders at a short shutdown track. It went .10.60s back then and 128.or so mph , No way I would do that now but it was cheap and I was bullet proof. LOL

Almost had forgot about those metallic brake shoes. Back then when we where racing none of that other stuff mattered. Now it’s everybody’s obsession, like the street cars today. Big radio, big tires, nine shocks for each wheel, power steering, calipers the size of suitcases and don’t forget the AC blowing cold. Truth be known that car is as safe as a small tire 1800 HP turbo-nitrous car today.
