Build a New hemi..parts are fairly inexpensive... and think light about the total weight... the lighter you make the whole car the quicker it is with less power you need,,, my car is very light at 2400# race weight and I run in the 8s.... one other thing how quick do you want to run and how much money will you spend.. making a car lighter is cheaper and and easier on parts

If I had a customer who wanted to go rounds weekend after weekend in a 9 second Duster I'd probably LS swap it. Ouch... Build a 512ci Big Block with INDY heads, and a GOOD convertor, Good suspension, and it shouldn't be that hard.

You need around 700 hp to run mid 9's at 3200 lbs. Any of the engines you listed can make 700 hp but you'll need really good heads for the SB and pretty good heads for a BB. If I had a customer who wanted to go rounds weekend after weekend in a 9 second Duster I'd probably LS swap it. This is the smart and cheap way after having my hands on a few in buddies rides. That being said, I'm a small block guy, all the same chassis, 727, 3200 lbs. all na.... Circa 06 ish w2 408 9.70s Circa 08ish, same 408 with w5s 9.50s Circa 12ish 430ci, Indy head. 9.30@144. Been on a hiatus doing a f2 deal with w8s since 15ish. I know most wont agree but this is how I roll. I like to do more with less. I like the challenge

And in regards to the post about LS swaping the thing, Gen3 hemi is basicly an LS swap, only that the hemi is alitle better choice.

Whats the best engine combo for a 9 second Duster?
Stroker 360. Stroker 400. Normal 440. Stroker 440.
Last but not least a HEMI! Big difference if you want to run 9.90 or 9.10 Also, depends on track elevation, 6,000 feet or sea level (less than 1,000 ft). For a high 9 sec at 3100-3200 lbs (with driver) I would consider a Gen 3 hemi. But with all my big block stuff, any 9 second would be a 511-540 CID stroker 440 wedge with Indy 440-1 heads. CNC ported.

Do a big block stroker and skip right over the 9’s and run 8’s. The parts to do it are surely available.

Find a wrecked Hellcat, swap the engine and trans, tune as needed. That's what I was thinking. Pick up a gen III and put a turbo on it. Maybe change the rods, open the ring gap, programmable ECU, etc. If you're starting with nothing may as well step into the 21st.
