Just curious, has anyone done this on a magnum motor? I am researching this for my 2000 Dakota. I know they finally make a standalone TCU. The swap would make a world of difference vs the original in terms of performance and mileage. Going from the 46RE with a 3.90 gear, the 8 hp with a 3.21 would give a gear multiplication of better than a 4.88! And the RPM drop at 60 and 70 mph is awesome!

Gear vendors is just an overdrive, 8 individual gears is way better! Can you supply more info on this? Who and do you have a link to control the 8 speeds? Not up on the bell housing bolt patterns but will it bolt up to magnum/LA without a adapter? Same for the flywheel/flex plate? I seen a post somewhere where they used a 727(or another trans don't remember) with a magnum motor and fabbed up their own mount that was welded to the bell housing. The ZF 8 speed is as big an advancement as overdrive was over 3 speeds. IIRC, the late hemi's use the old small block trans pattern, so bolting it up should be the easy part.

Is there a TCU with a push button shifter or paddle shift capability?

i think a full Hemi swap would be easier. And another 150 horsepower over the Magnum. Better fuel mileage from the Gen 3 is the icing on the cake. Not that I don't want to see this done, I really like my Magnums and it would be neat as hell to have an 8 speed on one.

Is the G3 bell housing pattern the same as magnum? Similar results and be done with a Gear Vendors unit with the 46re. Yes bellhousing is the same as the A/LA/Magnum engines , I have a 46RH in my 04 GTX ram, going back to a 518 NON-lock up next month...I had both a 46RH and then a 727 in my 2014 before I sold the rolling chassis. My Brother runs a 727 behind his current 441ci G3 in his 09 Ram. Sound germen is the best place to go for what you need to swap the 8sp in to any Mopar platform.. they are on the expensive side compared to DIYHEMI. Swapping a G3 in to the 94-01 rams is not hard DIYhemi makes it painless , and if you are not worried about Emissions Holley Terminator is the way to go.

I will have to use a shifter from an 8 speed, but that is not an issue. They make a trans controller now that requires a brake and rpm input (no biggie). My only hurdle (hopefully) is how to "relocate" the factory crankshaft position sensor, since the 8 speed does not have a tone ring on the flywheel. Im missing something.. When did they relocate the Crankshaft position sensor? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F59fuspn-EgMatt

The Magnum motor has a CPS tone ring on the flexplate. The Hemi's have them located somewhere else (not sure where) so there is no tone ring on the flywheel. Notice the Magnum has a flexplate with a tone ring and the starter ring gear on the converter. The Hemi has the starter ring gear on the flexplate. Did that answer your question?

Did not read the question properly. Was under the assumption that you were swapping a G3 engine. The video shows a company that make a stand alone 8HP controller. Matt

Is there a TCU with a push button shifter or paddle shift capability? Yes, Sound German sells paddle shifters for their controller as well. I think the easiest solution is get the manual flywheel for the magnum and have a machine shop cut out the clutch face. Mount the torque convertor to that and just figure out the spacing you need off.
